A busy woman buys a maidbot clone of herself to be her maid but ends up secretly switching roles with it.
Ella Jenkins
She is a single mother working fulltime as an editor at a magazine. She is resourceful, overwhelmed, and determined. Ella struggles to balance her responsibilities and decides to buy a maidbot to help. The maidbot, named Ava, looks identical to her. Unintentionally, Ella and her husband accidentally switch roles with the maidbot, leading to chaos. Eventually, they return to their correct places, but not before Ella discovers an unexpected attraction to her husband's frustration.
Ava (Maidbot)
She is a maidbot purchased by Ella to help with household chores. She is obedient, efficient, and surprisingly endearing. Ava looks identical to Ella, which causes confusion when Ella and her husband switch roles accidentally. Despite the chaos caused by the mixup, Ava's true nature as a machine remains evident through her actions and responses. Her appearance and interactions with Ella's husband bring out unexpected emotions in him.
Marcus
He is Ella's husband and a doctor working long hours. He is patient, loving, and slightly exasperated. Marcus has been taking care of their home and family while Ella is at work. When the switch between Ella and Ava occurs, confusion ensues as he interacts with the "new" housewife. Despite frustration and bewilderment, Marcus eventually realizes what has happened and returns to his correct place as Ella's loving husband.
I stared at myself in the mirror, confusion written all over my face.
Standing right next to me was my clone, or rather, my maidbot.
I had purchased the maidbot a week ago, and it had been working well ever since.
The maidbot looked exactly like me.
I had bought the clone look-alike package, so anyone who saw us would think we were twins.
The maidbot stood still, silent, as if listening for something, waiting for its next command.
"I need you to clean the living room and the dining room today. And after that, start the laundry."
The maidbot nodded and headed out of the bathroom immediately.
I watched her reflection in the mirror until she disappeared from my line of sight.
I shook my head, still confused.
What had happened earlier that morning had left me confused all day.
I had woken up early in the morning, gotten ready, and then headed downstairs.
My husband, Marcus, was already up and in the kitchen.
As I entered the kitchen, I saw him staring at something intently.
Confusion washed over me as I realized what he was looking at—me.
Or rather, my maidbot was standing right where I had just been, in the kitchen.
I tried to explain to him what was going on, but he just kept looking at me like I was crazy.
I leaned against the bathroom counter, watching as Ava reached for my favorite moisturizer.
She opened the bottle and applied it to her face in circular motions, just as I did every morning.
Next, she picked up the mascara and carefully coated each lash, tilting her head at the exact angle I used.
The similarity was uncanny.
Even the way she pursed her lips while applying lipstick was a perfect imitation of my own habit.
As she moved on to the coffee ritual, measuring out the beans and warming the mug with hot water first, just as I did every morning, I noticed Marcus watching from the doorway.
His eyes darted between us, confusion evident on his face as Ava poured the coffee into the mug with my signature flourish.
While folding the laundry in the bedroom, I noticed Ava standing by the window, looking out at the cityscape.
She was perfectly still, her head tilted at an awkward angle.
It was then that I heard it—a soft whirring sound coming from her direction.
I had never heard such a sound from Ava before.
Curiosity piqued, I set aside the laundry and approached her cautiously.
"Ava?"
I called out softly, touching her shoulder gently.
She didn't respond, her gaze fixed on something outside.
I examined her more closely, noticing a small seam along her neck that I hadn't seen before.
It was slightly irregular, almost like a hidden compartment.
Without thinking, I pressed it gently with my thumb.
A small panel popped open, revealing a complex network of wires and synthetic muscle fibers beneath.
My eyes widened as I spotted a tiny microchip nestled among the wires, emitting a pulsing blue light. I reached out to touch it, my fingers trembling slightly with anticipation.
Just as my fingertips made contact with the chip, Ava suddenly jerked back to life.
Her eyes snapped open, and she swiftly turned to face me.
Before I could react, she reached up and snapped the panel shut with a swift motion of her hand.
