I started working in a company and I didn’t know that it was owned by the mafia boss himself.
He was treating everyone badly but not me?
He was even cold to his family.
But why is he so sweet to me?
Then my best friend told me that the previous assistants didn’t last long because the boss was always rude to them.
I am still trying to understand why he is so nice to me.
Then my best friend told me something that made my heart stop.
"He likes you, Emily."
What?He likes me?
Why?I am just a normal girl.
There is nothing special about me.
Then why?

"I need a coffee!"
I heard him yell from inside his office while I was sitting at my desk.
I got up quickly and went inside his office.
I saw him looking through some papers on his desk.

He looked up at me when he heard the door open.
I walked over to his desk and he handed me his empty cup.
I took it quickly and turned to leave, but then I stopped and turned back to him.
"Mr. Russo?"
"Yes?"
He looked at me with a questioning gaze.
"Why are you so nice to me?"
He looked at me for a moment, then he looked back down at the papers in front of him.
The afternoon sun was casting shadows on the desk, making the papers look like they were scattered all over the place.
I noticed that his hands were shaking slightly as he reached for my empty coffee cup.

He picked it up slowly, like he was savoring the moment before he had to let it go.
Then he stood up and walked over to the window.
He looked out at the city skyline, his back to me.
I could see that his shoulders were tense, like he was trying not to move.
I wondered what was going through his mind. "What did you say?"
He turned around and looked at me with a confused expression.
"You asked why I’m nice to you," I replied.
"Oh, right."
He walked back over to his desk and sat down.
"I don’t know. You just seem like a nice person."
I nodded and turned to leave again, but then I stopped and turned back to him.
"Mr. Russo?"
"Yes?""Do you know what happened to your previous assistants?"
He looked at me with a surprised expression, like he hadn’t expected me to ask that question.
"I mean, they didn’t last very long," I said quickly.
"What do you mean?"
"They just didn’t last long. They would come and go."
"Oh."
He looked down at the papers in front of him again, like he was trying to avoid eye contact.
"I guess they just didn’t work out."
"Yeah."I nodded and turned to leave again, but then I stopped and looked back at him.
"But why? What happened?"
He sighed and rubbed his temples like he was getting a headache.
"I don’t know. Maybe they just weren’t cut out for this kind of job."
"Okay."
I nodded again and turned away from him finally. The papers in my hands felt heavy as I walked away from Mr. Russo’s office.
I couldn’t believe what Emily had just asked me.
It was like she knew something, but how could she?
I didn’t think anyone knew about what happened to my previous assistants except for my family and my men.
I needed to find out how much she really knew.

I followed her to the break room and watched as she chatted with some of the other employees.
She seemed to be a nice person, but I couldn’t let my guard down.
I needed to be careful around her.
I saw her friend Lily lean in close and whisper something in her ear.
Emily’s shoulders tensed up and she looked around nervously.
I clenched my fists at the sight.
They were talking about me, I could tell.
I turned and walked back to my office, calling Marco on the way.
"Marco, I need you to do something for me," I said when he answered.
"What is it, boss?"

"I want you to find out who’s been talking about my previous assistants."
"Yes, sir. I’ll get right on it."
"Thanks."
I hung up and sat down at my desk.
I stared at the papers in front of me, but I couldn’t focus on them.
I kept thinking about Emily and what she had just asked me.
Why was she so curious?
What did she know?
I decided to go through the security footage and see if I could find anything that would give me a clue. I pulled up the footage from the break room and watched as Emily talked with her friend Lily.
She looked concerned as Lily whispered in her ear, and then she looked around nervously.
I rewound the footage and watched again, this time paying attention to what Emily was saying before Lily whispered in her ear.
It looked like she was asking Lily if she knew anything about my previous assistants.
I pulled up more footage from different parts of the office, but there wasn’t anything else that stood out to me.
Then I decided to check the footage from the archive room where Emily had been working earlier in the day.
As soon as I pulled up the footage, I saw Emily walking into the room and looking around nervously.
She walked over to one of the filing cabinets and opened it up, pulling out a stack of files.
She sat down at one of the tables and started flipping through them, stopping occasionally to read something more closely. My chest tightened as I watched her dig through old employee files.
She was getting too close to the truth, and I knew that I needed to tell her before she found out on her own.
I picked up my phone and dialed Emily’s extension.
"Emily, we need to talk."
