Laa laa and the backhoe loader
Laa Laa
She is a threeyearold girl who loves machines and construction sites. She is curious, adventurous, and enthusiastic. Laa Laa is captivated by the sound and sight of a backhoe loader operating on a construction site. She eagerly approaches the machine, holding onto the backhoe operator's leg,and interacts with the other workers. Her parents worry about her fascination with machines but she is undeterred by their concerns.
Backhoe Operator
He is a worker operating a backhoe loader on a construction site. He is patient, friendly, and cautious. When Laa Laa approaches him,he gently pushes her away to prevent her from getting too close to the machine. Despite his initial caution,he engages with Laa Laa by letting her hold his hand and answering her questions about the machine. He appreciates her interest in his work and enjoys interacting with her.
Construction Worker
He is a worker helping with the construction site operations. He is playful, humorous, and encouraging. When Laa Laa visits the site,he introduces her to the different machines and makes funny animal sounds to engage her interest. He supports the interaction between Laa Laa and the backhoe operator by joining in to talk with her. The worker helps create a friendly atmosphere on the site, making it welcoming to children like Laa Laa.
I love machines.
I love construction sites.
When I hear the rumble of a machine, I will go look for it until I find it.
If I see a construction site, I will ask my parents to take me there to have a look.
Today, I heard the sound of a backhoe loader, "beep beep", and I am so excited that I run out of the house with my parents trying to catch up with me.
I see a big machine with its shovel scooping sand, and I quickly run over and hold onto the backhoe operator's leg.
The backhoe operator is surprised and gently pushes me away, "Hey little girl, don't come over here. It is dangerous."
I am not deterred and continue to follow him, "Uncle, what are you doing?"
The backhoe operator is forced to stop his machine and cannot do anything but let me hold onto his leg.
"Hey little girl, what is your name?"
"My name is Laa Laa."
"Laa Laa? That's a nice name. I haven't seen a threeyearold like you before. Are you interested in machines?"
"Yes!"
"Wow! There are not many kids like you who are interested in machines. Can you tell me what you know about this machine?"
"This is a backhoe loader!"
"Very good! Do you know what it is used for?"
"To dig holes!"
The backhoe operator looks around the site to make sure there are no other machines coming in this direction, then he takes my hand and leads me to the cab of his machine.
He holds my hand tightly so that I won't climb up onto the machine.
He points to the control levers inside the cab and tells me what each lever is used for.
"Look, Laa Laa, this lever controls the front shovel, and this one controls the back shovel. This one controls the direction of the machine, and this one is the accelerator."
I stretch on my tiptoes to see better.
He reaches into the cab and moves a lever slightly.
The bucket twitches.
I am startled by its movement and giggle.
Then I clap my hands together.
A construction worker brings over a small plastic toy backhoe and shows me how its parts match the real machine.
"Uncle, can I drive the real one someday?" I ask, eyes wide with wonder.
The backhoe operator chuckles softly, "Maybe when you're a bit older, Laa Laa. But you know, there's something special about this machine that not many people know."
I lean in closer, curiosity piqued, "What is it?"
I sit on a dirt pile watching the operator demonstrate the backhoe's movements.
He points to the front loader bucket and shows how it can scoop up rocks.
"This is the front loader bucket, Laa Laa. It helps us lift and move things around the construction site."
I nod eagerly, eyes wide with wonder.
He then moves his hand to the other controls, "And this part here, it's like a long arm. Watch closely!"
The machine's back part extends, swinging in a wide arc.
I gasp in delight.
The operator smiles at my reaction, "That's what we call a backhoe. It can dig deep holes for us."
"Wow," I breathe out, amazed.
"But why does the back part look different?"
The operator grins, "Well, Laa Laa, this machine has a secret. It can change shape!"
He swivels his seat around to face the other direction and starts making engine noises with his mouth.
I giggle at the sounds he's making.
The operator then grabs hold of the rear controls and moves them up and down.
The machine's arm folds up tight against its body.
"It looks different now!" "That's right! Now it can push dirt like a bulldozer!"
I clap my hands together excitedly and stand up from the dirt pile.
"Uncle, does that mean this machine can do everything?" I ask, eyes sparkling with newfound understanding.
The backhoe operator nods, "Almost everything, Laa Laa. It's like a superhero on the construction site, always ready to help."
I look at him with admiration, "I want to be like you when I grow up and drive machines that can do anything!"
