Encouraged by friends, a shy girl takes a brave step toward her crush during lunch.
I watched him from across the cafeteria as I always did.
He was gorgeous, and he didn’t even know I existed.
I wish I had the guts to go talk to him, but I didn’t.
I was too shy, too awkward.
He was popular and smart and athletic and beautiful.
I was none of those things.
I sat with my friends Sarah and Mark at our usual table by the window.
We always sat in the same place, so we could easily spot each other in the crowded room.
"Hey," Sarah said, dropping her tray down and sliding into her seat.
"Hey," I replied, smiling.
Mark followed close behind and sat to my left.
"You get any of that math homework?"
Sarah asked me as she opened her milk carton.
I shook my head.
"I don’t know. It looks hard."
"It’s not that bad. I’ll help you after school if you want."
"Okay. Thanks."
I pulled my sandwich from its bag and flattened it with my fingers before taking a small bite.
Sarah was really smart.
