I was never one to believe in soulmates.
I mean, I was a biochemist.
I believed in science and facts and evidence.
I didn’t believe that there was someone out there for me, that I was destined to be with just one person.
And even if I did believe that there was someone for everyone, I certainly didn’t think that I would find my soulmate at a cancer conference in a small hotel in the middle of nowhere.
But sometimes life has a way of surprising you.
Sometimes you meet someone, and you know that person is supposed to be with you.
Even if it doesn’t make any sense at first.
Even if you’re not sure that you like them right away.
I knew Damien Manrique was my soulmate the moment I saw him across the room.
I was standing near the refreshment table, pretending to study the conference schedule that had been handed out at registration.
But I wasn’t really looking at the schedule.
I was looking at him.
He was standing across the room, talking to Dr. Thompson, one of the conference organizers.
I didn’t know what they were talking about, but I could tell it was something serious.
Dr. Thompson was nodding intently, and Damien was gesturing with his hands as he spoke.
My heart pounded in my chest as I watched them.
I couldn’t believe that I was actually seeing him in person.
I had read all of his papers, all of his research on cancer treatment and prevention.
He was a genius, and I had always admired him from afar.
And now here he was, standing just a few feet away from me.
Dr. Thompson walked away after a moment, leaving Damien alone.
He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a stack of papers, which he began to review.
I watched him for a moment longer, then gathered my courage and moved closer to him.
I stopped at the coffee station next to him and poured myself a cup of coffee.
My hands were shaking slightly as I lifted the pot, but I tried not to let it show. I took my time pouring the coffee, making sure not to spill a drop.
I knew that Damien was only two feet away from me, but I didn’t dare look up at him.
Not yet.
Finally, when my cup was full, I replaced the pot on the burner and turned around to face him.
Our eyes met across the short distance between us, and I felt my heart skip a beat.
He was even more handsome than I had imagined, with dark hair and piercing blue eyes that seemed to see right through me.
I fumbled with my coffee cup, nearly spilling it on the floor.
Damien’s eyes narrowed as he looked at me, and I could tell that he was trying to figure out who I was.
His gaze flicked down to the conference badge that hung around my neck, and his eyes widened slightly as he read my name.
"Dr. Salvador," he said, his voice deep and smooth.
"I read your paper on targeted drug delivery systems."
I felt a shiver run down my spine at the sound of his voice.
It was even more intoxicating than I had imagined.
I steadied myself against the table and managed to find my voice.
"Yes," I said, trying to sound calm.
"I’m working on a new project at Stanford."
He nodded thoughtfully and took a sip of his coffee.
"Tell me more," he said, his eyes never leaving mine. I launched into an explanation of my research, telling him about the breakthroughs I had made in targeted drug delivery systems and how they could be used to treat cancer more effectively.
He listened intently, nodding occasionally as I spoke.
When I finished, he smiled and set his cup down on the table.
"That’s very interesting," he said.
"I’ve been working on a similar project myself."
I felt a surge of excitement at his words.
I couldn’t believe that Damien Manrique was actually talking to me about our shared research interests!
I leaned forward eagerly, wanting to hear more about what he had been working on.
But before he could say anything else, someone called out his name from across the room.
He turned to see who it was, and then excused himself to go talk to them. As he walked away, I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed that our conversation had been cut short.
But I knew that there would be plenty of other opportunities for us to talk during the conference, and I was determined to make the most of them. Damien Manrique was not only a brilliant scientist, but also a very attractive man.
And as I watched him walk away from me, I couldn’t help but feel drawn to him in a way that went far beyond mere admiration for his work. Damien Manrique is my soulmate?
That can’t be right!
I thought as I watched him walk away from me.
He’s not even my type!
But as much as I tried to deny it, there was no getting around the fact that Damien Manrique was my soulmate.
