I sat in the living room, staring at my laptop and trying to get some work done.

But all I could think about was my daughter, Mia.

She'd been gone for two hours, and she still hadn't come home.

I tried calling her several times, but she wouldn't answer.

I was starting to get seriously worried.

My partner, Emily, came into the room and sat next to me.

"Hey," she said, looking at me with concern.

"You're going to freak out, aren't you?"

"I'm already freaking out."

I groaned.

"She's been gone for two hours. What if something happens to her?"

Emily put her hand on my shoulder.

"She'll be fine. She's seventeen, remember? It's not like she's five anymore."

I knew Emily was right, but I couldn't help how I felt.

I was worried about Mia.

I always had been a protective mother, and now that protectiveness was turning into paranoia.

I sighed and rubbed my temples.

"I know. It's just...I don't know. It's not like she's gone over to a friend's house. She's at the mall with some boy."

Emily put her hand on my shoulder and gave it a squeeze.
