I was supposed to meet my parents at the restaurant an hour ago, but I couldn’t make myself go in.
I sat in my car, staring at the front door of the restaurant.
My heart was racing, and I felt like I was going to pass out.
This was not the life I wanted.
Not even close.
The door opened, and people came out.
Others went in.
I just sat there, frozen.
Suddenly, I had an idea.
I started the car and pulled out of my parking spot.
I put the car in gear and hit the gas, pulling out of the lot and onto the street.
There was a motorcyclist in my way, and he swerved to get out of my path just in time.
I didn’t even check to see if I could go before pulling into the intersection.
I heard tires screech and horns blow.
I kept going, not stopping until I reached the farthest corner of town.
Pulling over, I turned off the car and just sat there for a minute.
What was I going to do?
My phone started ringing, and I saw my mom’s name pop up on the screen.
I didn’t answer it.
I lean back in my seat, watching the occasional car pass by on this empty street.
The sun beats down on my windshield, making the inside of my car feel like an oven.
A motorcycle pulls up beside me, and I recognize the rider as the same one I nearly hit earlier.
He parks his bike and removes his helmet, shaking out his hair.
He walks toward my car, and I grip the steering wheel tighter.
"Hey," he says through my open window.
"Are you okay?"
He looks concerned rather than angry, so I relax a little.
"I’m fine," I say.
"Thanks for asking."
"Good," he says.
"You looked like you were in a hurry back there."
"I was," I say.
"I had to get away."
"From what?"
I hesitate for a moment before answering.
"An arranged engagement," I say.
"My parents are trying to marry me off to some guy I don’t even know. It’s not what I want."
His eyes soften as he listens to me, and he nods sympathetically. "I’m sorry," he says.
"That sounds really tough."
"It is," I say.
"But I can’t just sit here and do nothing. I have to take action."
"What are you going to do?"
I ask him.
"I’m going to help you," he says with a smile.
"My name is Mason, by the way."
"Nice to meet you, Mason," I say, extending my hand.
He shakes it firmly and then opens the door for me.
I step out of the car, ready to face whatever comes next.
Mason’s hand remained steady as I hesitated, studying his face for any sign of deception.
The leather of his jacket creaked as he leaned against his motorcycle, explaining how he knew a perfect spot where I could clear my head and figure things out.
My phone buzzed again - another message from Mom.
I silenced it, took a deep breath, and grabbed Mason’s hand.
He showed me how to secure the spare helmet, making sure it fit snugly.
The engine roared to life beneath us.
I wrapped my arms around his waist, heart racing as we pulled away from the curb.
