I was born and raised in Los Angeles, in a bad ghetto where there are a lot of gang fights, shootings, knife fights, and other crazy stuff that happens every day and night, and my life in this ghetto is not easy at all.
My father's name is Abdinur Abdi, and he is 41 years old.
He is originally from Somalia, and when he was young, he was involved in the gang life, but after having me, he left the gang life to focus on raising me and providing for my family.
He learned how to fix cars and became a mechanic, and he taught me how to fix cars as well.
My mom's name is Layla Abdi, and she is 39 years old.
She is originally from Yemen, and she is a single parent who takes care of my family by herself.
However, she cheated on my dad multiple times, which caused a lot of problems between them.
She loves me a lot, but she doesn't know how to take care of me and raise me properly.
I have been in prison for two years for murder.
When I was released from prison, I had two choices: either go back to my neighborhood or go back to high school.
If I went back to my neighborhood, I would have gotten involved in the gang life again because all my friends there are involved in gangs.
Love Me In Spanish
I walk into the school office, my hands clenched in my pockets.
The secretary looks up at me suspiciously, her finger hovering near the security button.
I fill out the registration forms, and then she calls the principal.
He comes out of his office and looks at me with a frown on his face.
He asks me to come into his office, and I follow him.
He sits down behind his desk and tells me to sit down in front of him.
He looks at my prison record and shakes his head.
"Mr. Abdi, you have been in prison for two years. What makes you think you can come back to high school?"
I shrug my shoulders and say, "I don't know. I just want to finish high school."
He sighs and says, "Fine. You will be in Ms. Williams' remedial class. She will help you catch up on your work. But let me make one thing clear: there is zero tolerance for violence in this school. If you get into a fight or cause any trouble, you will be expelled immediately. Do you understand?"

I nod my head and say, "Yes, sir."
He hands me a copy of my schedule and says, "Good luck, Mr. Abdi."
I walk out of the office and into the hallway.
Students are walking around, talking and laughing with each other.
Some of them look at me suspiciously, while others ignore me completely.
A few of them recognize me from the streets and quickly move out of my way. I see Eva walking down the hallway with Miguel's arm around her shoulder.
She sees me and our eyes meet for a moment before she looks away.
I approach her cautiously, "Eva, can we talk for a minute?"
Miguel tightens his grip on her shoulder, glaring at me, "What do you want, Abdi? Haven't you done enough damage?"
Eva glances between us and sighs, "Miguel, let me handle this. Abdi, what are you doing back here?"

I walk into Ms. Williams' classroom, and everyone turns to look at me.
The fluorescent lights hum above us, casting an artificial glow over the room.
The students are seated in clusters, separated by race.
The Latino kids are near the windows, the Black kids are in the back corner, and the Asian kids are up front.
There is only one white kid in the class, a boy with blond hair and blue eyes who sits alone at his desk.
Ms. Williams stands at the front of the room, writing something on the whiteboard.
She turns around and smiles when she sees me, "Welcome to class. Why don't you come up here and introduce yourself?"
My shoes squeak against the linoleum as I walk to the front of the room.
Twenty-five pairs of eyes watch my every move.
When I reach the front, I clear my throat and say, "I'm Mohamed Abdi. I'm sixteen."

"And I'm here to change my story."
I take my seat near the middle of the room, not wanting to sit with any particular group.
Ms. Williams starts her lesson, talking about Romeo and Juliet.
But I'm not paying attention.
My eyes are on the empty desk next to me.
The door creaks open fifteen minutes late, and Eva walks in.
Her gold earrings catch the fluorescent light as she scans the room.
She could sit with the Latino kids by the windows, but instead, she walks straight for the empty desk next to mine.
Miguel's friends tense up, their chairs scraping against the floor.
Eva slides into the seat, her shoulder brushing against mine as she leans over.
My heart pounds in my chest when she whispers those four words.

"Why did you really return?"
I hesitate, then murmur, "To make things right."
She studies my face, her voice barely audible, "Even with Miguel watching?"
I lean closer, keeping my voice low as the class continues discussing Romeo and Juliet.
The fluorescent lights cast harsh shadows across our textbooks.
"The Latino guys are glaring from the windows, and my own crew is muttering in the back. You shouldn't be sitting here."
Eva adjusts her gold earrings, a nervous habit I remember from before prison.
She glances at Miguel's empty seat, then back at me, her voice steady, "We can be friends, Abdi. Just because I'm dating Miguel doesn't mean we can't talk."

Ms. Williams looks up from her book, "Eva, would you mind reading Juliet's lines?"
Eva squeezes my arm before standing up.
I correct Ms. Williams when she calls me by my last name.
My jaw tightens at the mistake.
The fluorescent lights cast harsh shadows across her surprised face as she stands at the podium, attendance sheet in hand.
Eva shifts beside me, her gold earrings catching the light.
"I already read Romeo and Juliet," she announces to break the awkward silence.
Love Me In Spanish
Her voice carries across the quiet classroom.
Other students watch the exchange, some smirking, others looking bored.
