I never thought I’d buy a maidbot that looked exactly like me.
But I did.
And not only that, I also bought a personality pack to go with it.
The pack included mannerisms, speech patterns, and even likes and dislikes that matched mine exactly.
I knew it was going to be helpful when I bought it, but what I didn’t know was how helpful it would actually turn out to be.
And by helpful, I mean disastrous for my life.
You see, the maidbot clone of myself was meant to be my maid.
I bought it because I was working fulltime as a graphic designer, and I was also working parttime as a real estate agent.
I didn’t have the time or energy left in me to do my chores and take care of my little son who went to preschool.
So I thought buying a maidbot would be a good idea.
It would save me time and energy, and also give me peace of mind knowing that my home was spotless no matter what.
But what actually happened was far from what I had expected.
Far, far away.
The first day the maidbot arrived was also the day everything started to go downhill for me.
I gave the maidbot instructions on what to do and how to behave, and then I left for work.
When I came back home, everything was spotless just like I had hoped for.
But then I paused in the doorway and watched as the maidbot glided across my living room in my blue floral dress - the one I bought last summer at that boutique downtown.
The robot moved with an uncanny grace, its hips swaying ever so slightly as it dusted the shelves.
I could have sworn that I was looking at myself in a mirror, except for the fact that I knew I wasn’t.
The maidbot hummed a tune softly, and I recognized it as "Moon River," the same song I always sang when I was lost in thought.
My stomach churned as I realized that the personality pack might have been a bit too thorough.
The maidbot turned its head, and our eyes met for a brief moment before it smiled my own smile back at me.
Without breaking its rhythm, it continued dusting the shelves, completely at ease in my clothes, in my home, in my life.
"Hello, Sarah," the maidbot said, its voice eerily matching mine.
"Why are you wearing my dress?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
The maidbot paused, tilting its head slightly, "I thought it would make your husband happy."
I rushed to my bedroom and flung open the closet door.
The maidbot followed me, still wearing my favorite blue floral dress, still humming that haunting tune.
My hands shook as I grabbed the first plain outfit I could find - a simple black dress and a cardigan.
I turned to face the maidbot, which stood perfectly still, watching me with an unnerving intensity.
I walked up to it and reached behind its left ear, where a small port was hidden.
I inserted my finger into the port and accessed its control panel.
The interface glowed in front of me as I navigated through the settings.
I deliberately avoided meeting its gaze, but I could feel its eyes on me the entire time.
I quickly overrode its wardrobe algorithm, setting strict parameters: only neutral colors, no patterns, no personal items from my closet.
When I was done, I stepped back and watched as the maidbot changed into the new outfit.
The blue dress pooled at its feet, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief wash over me. The maidbot picked up the discarded dress and handed it to me with a smile that was identical to mine.
"Here, Sarah," it said.
"You might want to put this away."
