I couldn't pass up the little pink heart-shaped balloon.
It was sitting on the shelf in one of those crappy tourist gift shops that line the beachside boardwalk.
The kind of place that sells seashells and t-shirts with "I'm with Stupid" arrows printed on the front.
The kind of place that makes you wonder how the owners manage to stay in business.
The pink heart balloon was perched on the top shelf, surrounded by other Valentine's Day decorations that were too lazy to be actual decorations.
A few feet of crepe paper, some pink and red streamers, a half dozen balloons tied to a plastic weight.
The pink heart balloon was the only one of its kind.
It had no string and no weight.
It looked like it had been placed there as an afterthought.
As if someone had ordered a bunch of Valentine's Day supplies for the gift shop, but this particular balloon didn't have a purpose.
It was too big to be tied to a chair or given as a gift.
It would look stupid floating above a table.
The only place it would have fit in was the front window of the touristy gift shop, but it wasn't even good enough for that.
I walk closer to the shelf, my eyes fixed on the balloon's glossy surface.
The fluorescent lights of the gift shop cast a soft sheen across its pink exterior.
My hand extends toward it, hesitates for a moment, then continues.
I can feel a faint warmth radiating from the balloon.
It's not hot, but it's definitely not as cool as the surrounding air.
The cashier is behind the counter, reading a magazine and paying no attention to me.
My fingers make contact with the balloon's surface - it feels like silk, but warmer, almost alive.
There's a subtle pulse beneath the surface, like a heartbeat.
The balloon seems to lean into my touch and I grip it more firmly.
"Do you feel that?" I ask, glancing over at the cashier.
He looks up from his magazine, a hint of surprise in his eyes. "Feel what? It's just a balloon."
"But it's warm," I insist, my voice barely above a whisper.
He shrugs, returning to his magazine.
"Probably just the lights."
I purchase the balloon for five dollars and carefully cradle it in my arms as I walk to my car.
The drive home is uneventful, but I can't help sneaking glances at the balloon, which rests in the passenger seat.
At first, it's the size of my palm, but by the time I reach the highway, it's grown to the size of a baseball.
By the time I reach my exit, it's as large as a basketball.
I stop at a red light and reach over to touch it again.
The surface feels warmer now, almost hot, and I can see faint swirls of pink moving beneath its translucent surface.
The balloon pulses against my fingertips and I swear I hear a soft humming noise coming from within.
I pull into my driveway and the balloon twitches.
"Did you hear that?" I murmur, stepping out of the car with the balloon in my arms.
My neighbor, Mrs. Thompson, is watering her garden and looks over curiously. "Hear what, dear? Is it that strange humming again?"
"Yeah," I reply, glancing down at the balloon, which seems to vibrate slightly in response.
