I was lost in the stacks.
It wasn’t unusual for that to happen.
The university library was massive, with millions of books filling shelves upon shelves.
Some sections were more popular than others, and the farther you went into the stacks, the less likely you were to see another human being.
I loved getting lost in the stacks.
I loved discovering old books that hadn’t been checked out in years.
Sometimes, I’d find an ancient tome bound in leather, and I’d spend hours poring over the yellowed pages, imagining what it would be like to live during that time period.
Sometimes, I found diaries or personal letters from people who had lived during historical events.
Those were always my favorite.
And sometimes, I found books that made me wonder how they ever ended up in a public library.
Those were usually my least favorite, but they were also the most exciting.
I had no idea what I would find today.
I had been walking for what felt like hours, shelves stretching out before me on either side, until I came to a dead end.
I turned left, then right, wondering which way I had come from.
That was when I saw it: a door hidden behind a shelf of books on medieval history.
It looked old, like it hadn’t been opened in years.
Lost in the Library of Your Dreams
I hesitate at the threshold, my hand still gripping the rusty doorknob.
The air from below feels different - stale and heavy with age.
I fish my phone from my pocket and activate its flashlight, casting a weak beam of light down the stairs.
The walls are rough stone, and the stairs curve downward in a spiral, worn smooth in the center from countless footsteps.
Dust motes dance in my light.
I take one tentative step onto the first stair, testing its stability.
The stone holds firm beneath my weight.
My heart pounds as I take another step, then another, one hand trailing along the damp wall for balance.
The door creaks shut behind me with a decisive click.
I try the handle, but it won’t budge.
Lost in the Library of Your Dreams
I’m committed now.
My heart pounds as I test the door one last time, but it’s firmly locked.
The only light comes from the weak beam of my phone, casting long shadows on the curved stone walls.
I lean against the wall, trying to steady my breathing and think rationally.
The air down here tastes old and dusty, like forgotten books.
After a few minutes of internal debate, I realize there’s no choice - I can’t stay here forever.
Lost in the Library of Your Dreams
Gripping the rough stone wall, I take my first tentative step downward.
"Are you sure you want to go down there?" a voice echoes from the darkness below, startling me.
"Who's there?" I call out, my voice trembling slightly as I peer into the shadows.
"Just someone who got curious like you," the voice replies, calm and almost amused, "but I found something that changed everything."
