I was sitting in the corner, smiling broadly at everyone who came to give me a birthday gift or a word of congratulations.
My husband, Romeo, was also by my side, saying all sorts of sweet words in my ears that would make them tickle.
I was so happy and proud of myself that I had finally found a man who truly loved me, and I was ready to spend the rest of my life with him.
"Happy anniversary, honey," he said as he gave me a kiss on the cheek, and I blushed, looking around to see if anyone had seen that, but luckily no one had.
"It's our anniversary, and I have another surprise for you," he said, and I couldn’t wait to hear it.
I was so happy that everything felt right in the world at the moment.
I knew that I had made the right decision by marrying him.
"What’s the surprise, Romeo?"
I asked eagerly.
"I have a new job for you," he said as he smiled at me.
A look of confusion covered my face at that moment.
What could this new job be?
Was he promoting me?
Had he finally found me a better job?
"Really? What’s the job?"
I asked, leaning in to hear what he had to say.
"My friend owns a company, and he is looking for someone to work in the position of an assistant," he said, and I looked at him, trying to figure out what this job was.
I was so curious at that moment.
I wanted to know more about it.
Was it a high-paying job?
Was it a very easy job?
What did I need to do to get the job?
The questions were running through my mind at that moment, and I wanted to hear more about it.
"The salary is very good," he said, and my eyes widened.
I didn’t know how much money he was talking about, but I knew that I would be able to take care of myself and maybe even send some money home.
That would make everyone happy.
"That sounds too good to be true. What are the requirements?" "Nothing much. You just have to be loyal and hardworking," he said, smiling at me.
I was so excited at that moment.
This was too good to be true.
I had always dreamed of working in a big company like that.
I had always dreamed of earning a lot of money and being able to live a comfortable life.
"I would love to get this job," I said excitedly, and he smiled at me.
"I already told him about you," he said, and my eyes widened again.
"You did? When?"
"Last week," he replied, and I couldn’t believe it.
He had already spoken to his friend about me before telling me anything?
What if his friend didn’t like me?
What if he wanted someone else for the position? "You should come by tomorrow. He wants to meet you," Romeo said, pulling me back from my thoughts.
"What time?"
"Any time after 10 am. He will be expecting you."
I nodded as I looked around the room where everyone was having fun drinking and dancing.
Natalia caught my eye across the room as she watched us with a smirk on her face.
She had been watching us since Romeo started talking to me about the job offer.
Why was she looking at us like that?
Did she know something?
Did she know something that Romeo wasn’t telling me?
Maybe she knew more about the job than Romeo was letting on.
I needed answers, and I knew just who could give them to me.
I excused myself and made my way over to Natalia.
"Hey, Natalia, you seem to know something about this job Romeo mentioned," I said, trying to sound casual.
She leaned in closer, lowering her voice, "Just be careful, okay? His friend's company isn't exactly what it seems."
I looked at her, my heart pounding in my chest.
What did she mean?
Was she trying to scare me away from the job?
What was going on?
"Careful? What do you mean?"
I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
She glanced around the room, making sure no one was listening to our conversation.
"Nothing, just be careful," she said, smiling at me.
I looked at her, trying to figure out what she was hiding.
Why was she being so secretive about this?
What did she know that I didn’t?
"Natalia, what’s going on? What do you know?"
I asked again, my voice firm this time.
She looked around the room once more before leaning in closer to me.
"The company's a front," she whispered, her eyes locked on mine.
"What do you mean?"
I asked, my heart racing in my chest.
"It’s not what it seems," she said again, her voice barely above a whisper.
"What do you mean?"
I asked again, feeling frustrated and scared at the same time.
"I can’t tell you here. Just be careful when you go there tomorrow," she said before walking away from me.
I stood there for a moment, trying to process what she had just told me.
What did she mean by the company being a front?
What was going on?
I needed answers and I needed them now. I made my way back over to Romeo and tried to act normal for the rest of the night.
But Natalia’s words kept playing in my head.
What was going on with this company?
I knew that I had to find out more about it before I went there tomorrow.
I couldn’t just walk into something blindly without knowing what I was getting myself into.
As soon as Romeo dropped me off at home, I rushed inside and grabbed my laptop.
I needed to find out more about this company and what they did before I went there tomorrow.
After hours of searching, I finally found something that caught my eye.
A news article about the company being involved in some illegal activities but nothing concrete because they were able to cover their tracks well enough that no one could prove anything against them.
But something wasn’t right about all of this and I needed to find out more before I got myself involved with them.
The next morning, I woke up early and made my way into Romeo’s office before he woke up for the day.
I got to the company’s office before dawn broke.
The building was eerily quiet, and I could hear the sound of my heels clicking on the floor as I made my way inside.
The security guard barely looked at me as he let me in.
I had forged an ID for myself that said I was working there, and he didn’t even question it.
I walked through the dimly lit corridors, my footsteps echoing off the walls.
I knew exactly where Romeo’s office was located, and I made my way there quickly.
I picked the lock with shaking hands, trying not to make a sound.
Once inside, I started going through his drawers, looking for anything that would give me a clue about what was going on.
My fingers brushed against papers and files as I rummaged through them.
Suddenly, a folder caught my eye.
It was marked "Confidential" and had a red stamp on it.
I opened it up and found documents detailing money laundering schemes and fraudulent transactions.
My heart pounded in my chest as I snapped photos of the documents with my phone.
I knew that this was the proof I needed to bring Romeo down. Suddenly, I heard footsteps coming from down the hall.
I quickly hid behind Romeo’s desk, holding my breath as the person approached the office door.
They paused for a moment outside before moving on to another room.
I slipped out of the office, clutching the evidence tightly, knowing this was only the beginning.
The morning sun barely made it through the blinds, casting a dim light on the kitchen table where I sat.
I was pouring over the photos of the incriminating documents on my phone, trying to make sense of it all.
Each image was a piece of the puzzle that could bring down Romeo’s empire.
But I knew I couldn’t do it alone.
I needed allies, and my mind wandered to the employees who might resent him.
I made a mental note to observe them more closely at work, looking for any signs of dissatisfaction or unease.
As I got ready for work, my mind raced with possibilities.
Who could I trust?
What would be their motivations?
I arrived at the office and went about my day as usual, but now I was looking at everything through a different lens.
I watched how Romeo interacted with his employees, looking for any cracks in his facade.
I noticed that some of them seemed disgruntled or wary around him.
Maybe they had seen something too? Lunchtime rolled around, and I decided to take a walk outside to clear my head.
As I stepped out into the fresh air, I spotted a woman sitting on a bench across the street from the office building.
She looked like she worked there too, and something about her seemed familiar.
I crossed the street and approached her hesitantly.
"May I join you?" she asked, nodding her head in approval.
I sat down beside her and introduced myself, trying to act casual.
She told me her name was Lisa and that she worked in accounting.
We chatted for a bit about our jobs and then fell into an awkward silence.
It was then that I decided to take a risk and see if she would bite.
"I have a feeling that things aren’t what they seem here," I said, keeping my voice low and cryptic. Her eyes widened slightly, and she looked at me with newfound interest.
"What do you mean?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I’m not sure yet," I replied honestly.
"But I think there’s more going on here than meets the eye."
She nodded slowly, seeming to consider my words carefully.
"I agree," she said finally.
"I’ve seen some things that don’t add up."
My heart skipped a beat as I realized that maybe Lisa could be an ally after all.
"Would you be willing to meet later and talk more about it?" she asked, glancing nervously around us as if she were afraid of being overheard.
I agreed, and we made plans to meet after work.
As the day went on, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation mixed with caution.
I knew that I had to tread carefully, but I was also excited at the prospect of finally having someone to share my suspicions with.
As the clock ticked closer to our meeting time, I found myself getting more and more anxious.
I started making a list of questions to ask Lisa and potential leads to follow up on.
I knew that every piece of information was crucial in building a case against Romeo.
When the workday finally came to an end, I made my way to the designated meeting spot, a small café on the outskirts of town.
It was quiet and dimly lit, perfect for a clandestine meeting.
Lisa arrived a few minutes later, her eyes darting nervously around the room.
We ordered some coffee and sat down at a table in the corner, trying to blend in as much as possible. "So," I said, leaning forward eagerly.
"What have you seen?"
She took a deep breath before speaking, her voice trembling slightly.
"I’ve noticed some strange transactions going through the accounting department," she said.
"Money being moved around without any explanation."
I nodded intently, taking it all in.
"That’s definitely suspicious," I agreed.
"Have you seen anything else?"
She hesitated for a moment before speaking again.
"I overheard Romeo talking on the phone once," she said.
"He was saying something about needing to cover his tracks."
My heart raced at this new information.
This was concrete evidence that Romeo was involved in something illegal.
But I knew that we needed more if we were going to take him down for good.
"Do you think you could get your hands on any documents?" she asked, her eyes pleading with me.
"Anything that could help us prove what he’s doing?"
I nodded determinedly.
"I’ll do my best," I said. We talked for a few more minutes before deciding it was time to part ways.
As we stood up from the table, Lisa handed me a piece of paper with her phone number on it.
"Call me if you find anything," she said quietly before turning and walking away.
I watched her go, feeling a sense of determination wash over me.
I knew that this was just the beginning of our investigation, but I was ready for whatever lay ahead. As I walked back to my car, I felt a sense of excitement mixed with trepidation.
