I was sorry for myself that day.
I was sorry that I was a boy who nobody noticed.
I was sorry that I had nobody to talk to.
I was sorry that I even had to hide in an empty closet to avoid being seen during the school lockdown.
And then, I wasn't so sorry anymore.
Because somebody else was hiding in that closet, too.
And it turned out, it was somebody I knew very well.
Somebody I'd secretly admired from afar for a very long time.
But I still didn't know who she was until the lockdown was over.
And by then, it was too late.
The entire school was talking about us the next day.
About how we were found together in that closet.
About how we were sitting in the corner, backs against the wall, heads on each other's shoulders, fast asleep.
Like two lovers who'd run away together.
I sit there, motionless, afraid to move and reveal my presence.
The air is thick with dust and the scent of cleaning supplies.
A shift beside me, then her whisper cuts through the darkness.
"Are you okay?"
My heart pounds against my ribs.
I don't answer, too afraid to make a sound.
The voice is familiar, but I can't place it.
She inches closer, her shoulder brushing against mine.
Electricity courses through my body at the contact.
I hold my breath, unsure whether to respond or pretend I didn't hear her.
Her hand finds mine in the darkness, and her fingers intertwine with my trembling ones.
The footsteps in the hallway grow louder, echoing off the lockers.
My breath catches as she tugs on my sleeve, pulling me further into the cramped closet.
We squeeze past hanging mops and cleaning supplies, retreating to the darkest corner.
The metal shelving unit digs into my back as we press ourselves against it.
She's so close now I can smell her strawberry shampoo.
A beam of light sweeps under the door - someone's checking the rooms with a flashlight.
Her hand finds mine again in the darkness, and she places a finger to her lips.
