Livia and Benjamin, who were best friends and then something more until he broke her heart, reunite at university and are forced to confront their pasts as they navigate their new relationship.
I remember the first time I met Benjamin Parker.
He was standing in the corner of the classroom, playing with a toy car and trying to catch my attention.
I was five years old, starting my first day of kindergarten, and I had absolutely no desire to make new friends.
He had messy blond hair and green eyes that seemed to dance with excitement.
He was tall for his age and looked like a little man.
And apparently, he didn’t understand that I didn’t want to be his friend.
“Look, I have a car,” he said, holding it up.
“I like cars, do you?”
I looked at him as if he were crazy.
“What’s wrong with you?”
he asked, obviously offended.
“I just wanted us to play together.
I’ve never been to school before, have you?”
No, I’d like to go home now,” I told him.
I walked over to my teacher and tugged on her dress.
“Ms.Brynn, can you please call my mom?
I don’t want to be here anymore.”
She bent down and smiled at me.
“Your mom will be here soon, sweetie.
We’re going to have so much fun today!”
I scowled at her and crossed my arms over my chest.Hurry up,” I mumbled.
I stomped back over to Benjamin, who was still playing with his car.
“My mom said she’ll be here soon,” I told him.
“Good,” he said, not at all affected by my statement.“Then we can play later.”
My eyes widened at his words. Why would we play later when we could play then?
“Do you want me to show you around until your mom comes?
I know where everything is because I went to an open house last week, before school started,” he said, looking so pleased with himself that I couldn’t help but smile at him.
I didn’t say anything, but I followed him as he showed me where the bathroom was and introduced me to our classmates.
We sat down at a table and waited for our teacher to tell us what to do next.
“Is your mom here yet?”
I asked him when she still hadn’t shown up after what felt like hours but was probably only minutes at the most.
“I don’t know,” he said and looked around the room.“Do you see her anywhere?”
I got up and walked back over to my teacher and pulled on her dress again.
“What do you need, Livia?”
“Can you call my mom? She’s late and she’s supposed to be here now.”
“She’ll be here soon,” Ms.Brynn said as if she didn’t understand the urgency of what I was telling her.
I stomped back over to Benjamin and sat down in my chair next to him again.
I looked at the clock on the wall and waited for the second hand to move forward so that it would finally be time for us to leave.
