Lily's partner, Max, rejects her and cheats on her on their anniversary, leading her to seek comfort in the arms of Alpha Adrian from another pack, but their encounter leaves her feeling humiliated and embarrassed.
There were some things that time couldn’t mend or fix, and for every wolf shifter that was finding their true mate after they’ve been claimed by another wolf.
I knew deep down that Max wasn’t mine, even after all this time together.
But I had hoped that we could still be together even if we weren’t mates.
He was the Beta of our pack, and his bloodline ran strong and pure; I didn’t care about any of that.
It never mattered to me who he was or what his title was within our pack.
As long as we were together, nothing else mattered.
But it seemed like it did matter to him after all.
His voice snapped me out of my daze and I turned to look at him.
"Please," I begged.
"Just let me go."
I needed to get out of here before I completely lost it.
Max sighed heavily and took a step back.
"Fine."
"But you need to give me back the necklace," he said quietly.
The necklace!
The one thing that he had given me years ago as a promise that we would be together forever.
I reached up and touched the little silver heart hanging on the thin chain around my neck without thinking about it much until now when his words registered in my brain.
He was taking back the necklace.
It was over; there was no going back from this.
I felt my eyes fill with tears again as I took off the necklace and handed it back to him.
"Thank you," I said hoarsely.
I wanted to run away, but my legs wouldn’t move.
"I hope you find someone who makes you happy," I whispered. "Bye."
With that, I turned around and ran as fast as I could into the night.
I didn’t know where I was going or what direction to take.
I just needed to get as far away from here as possible so I could let go of my pain and grief at being rejected by the man I loved so much.
I ran for miles until I finally reached home; a small house on the outskirts of town that had been given to me by Max’s pack since I worked as a teacher at their school for young wolves.
