"JENNIE, LIKE JENNIE, EXTRAL, EXTRA L, LIKE JENNIE."
I heard the slogan as I walked out of my van to go inside the building for a meeting.
I was a Kpop star, and my recent tour in Asia was sold out.
Yes, baby, it was sold out!
All the haters gonna hate, but I was living my best life.
Yes, baby, my best life.
I had recently done a tour in Asia, and it was sold out.
That's why I was called into this meeting.
Some of the Korea nation didn't like that I was getting too much attention and getting too big.
They didn't like that a black Kpop idol was getting too famous and making it big in their recent formed group.
They thought I was getting too hot and famous, so they forced me into a new group and made me the leader.
They thought by putting me in a new group, I would fall off the fame ladder and not be hot anymore.
Well, fuck them!
I wasn't made to fall off; I was made to be on top.
I walked into the building with my head held high and my swag on 100.
I knew everybody knew me, and they were probably talking about how famous I was making it big as a Kpop star.

I walked into the meeting room, and I looked around at all the faces.
I saw some of the company executives, the other members of my old group, and some new faces.
I knew the new faces were probably going to be my new group members.
I saw her sitting with the new group members.
She was my old crush from trainee days.
My heart skipped a beat, but I kept my composure and walked over to the empty chair at the head of the table.
"Good morning," I said to everyone as I sat down.
"Good morning, Jennie," they replied back.
The CEO and other company executives started talking about image concerns and market dynamics.
I wasn't paying attention to them; I was looking at Minju, my old crush from trainee days.

She was looking at me too, but she was doing it subtly so that nobody could see her looking at me.
I liked that she was looking at me; it made me feel good inside. "So as you all know, we are making a new group. Jennie will be the leader of this group. Minju will be Jennie's main vocal partner. The other members are Jisoo, Chaeyoung, and Dahyun. They are all very talented and will make a great addition to our company," one of the company executives said.
When he said that Minju would be my main vocal partner, she smiled a little bit.
The other members shifted uncomfortably in their seats when they heard that I would be their leader.
I leaned back in my chair and crossed my arms over my chest.

"So you're punishing my success by making me babysit rookies?"
I asked, looking at the CEO with a smirk on my face.
"Watch me turn this punishment into a masterpiece."
The meeting went on for a while longer, but it was very tense.
After the meeting, I went to my private dressing room to get ready for my next event.
I pulled out my phone and went on Instagram to look at the comments from my fans.
They were saying that they loved me and were proud of me.
They said that they would support me no matter what group I was in.
I scrolled through the comments, and then I went to my recent post about my tour.
I saw Minju's profile had liked a lot of my photos from the tour.
I thought that was weird, but then I heard a knock on the door.
"Come in," I said.
The door opened, and one of the girls from the new group walked in.

It was Seolhwa.
She looked nervous as she walked over to where I was sitting. "Hi Jennie, can we talk?" she asked.
"Yeah, what's up?"
I replied.
She sat down in the chair next to me and took a deep breath before speaking.
"I just wanted to say that I don't agree with management's decision to make you the leader of our group. It's not fair. You're already a famous idol, and we are just rookies. We don't want to be held back by your success."
I nodded my head and said, "I understand your concerns. But let me ask you something."
"Okay," she replied nervously.
"Do you think that management would have made this decision if I was white?"
She looked shocked by my question but quickly regained her composure.
"I don't know Jennie. Maybe," she replied hesitantly.
"Maybe? That's bullshit. Management doesn't like that I'm black and making it big. They think that it's not fair for me to be more famous than the other members of the group."
Seolhwa nodded her head in agreement with me.
"Well Jennie, I have something to tell you."
"What is it?"
I asked curiously.
"I heard some things when we were having closed-door meetings. The other members of the group were talking about how they didn't like you being made leader. But Minju stood up for you and told them that they should respect your experience and talent." "Really? What else did she say?"
I asked excitedly.
"She said that she had always admired you as an artist and wanted to be your vocal partner."
Seolhwa replied with a smile on her face.

"Okay, thank you for telling me that."
Seolhwa got up and left the dressing room.
I stared at my phone for a minute, thinking about what she had told me.
I opened the messaging app on my phone and typed out a message to Minju.
"Want to come over tonight? We should practice our harmonies."
I hesitated for a second before hitting send.
I remembered how she stood up for me in those meetings.
My thumb hovered over the delete button, but I pushed through the nervousness and sent it.
Three dots appeared right away.
She replied with a smiley face and said, "Yeah, I'll bring some takeout. See you at 8."

I smiled as I read her response.
We used to stay up late practicing when we were trainees.
I got up from the chair and started tidying my apartment.
I was ready to show them all what we could become.
I arranged some snacks and sheet music on the coffee table.
I sat down on the couch and waited for Minju to arrive.
My heart was racing in my chest, but I took a few deep breaths to calm myself down.
The doorbell rang, and I got up to answer it.
When I opened the door, Minju was standing there with bags of tteokbokki.
"Hey," she said with a smile on her face.
"Hey," I replied as I took the bags from her.
We walked over to the kitchen table and sat down.
I pulled out the tteokbokki and we started eating.
The awkwardness went away when we started doing vocal warm-ups together.

Our voices blended perfectly together on the chorus of "Like Jennie."
I looked up and saw her watching me in the wall mirror.
She smiled at me when she saw me looking at her.
We finished our food and went into the living room to practice our harmonies. We practiced for a while, but then we took a break to get some water.
She sat down next to me on the couch, and our shoulders were touching.
I felt nervous, but I didn't pull away from her.
She looked over at me with a smile on her face.
"I missed singing with you during your solo years," she said softly.
I turned my head to look at her, and our faces were inches apart.
I could feel her breath on my skin, and it made my heart race even more than before.

She leaned forward and pressed her lips against mine softly.
In that moment, everything else faded away.
