The sound of my name being called over the PA system at the Oslo International Airport shook me from my daydream.
I had been lost in thought, staring blankly at the row of expensive, imported whiskeys that lined the bar’s back wall, wishing I could afford a bottle.
Instead, I was stuck making cappuccinos and lattes for the airport’s travelers as a barista at the Scottish pub.
It was an appropriate setting for a girl who had always dreamed of being a writer to find work, I suppose.
Even if that work was part-time and left me with too much free time to ponder my own life choices.
I wish I could say that something more exciting than a coffee shop awaited me on the other end of our tiny, two-story airport, but I couldn’t.
I took a deep breath and grabbed the freshly printed order that had just arrived from the terminal.
A double espresso and a glass of Talisker, one of the most expensive scotches in the world, were on their way to table twelve.
The espresso was easy.
The Talisker, however, was not.
Our stock of the rare whiskey was kept under lock and key in the storage room, limiting how much we could serve in a night.
It wasn’t often that we ran out of the stuff, but it happened.
And when it did, it was usually because there was one customer who just couldn’t resist ordering a glass.
One customer who just wouldn’t take no for an answer.
This time, it seemed, would be no different.
And as I made my way to the back room to retrieve the bottle, I knew exactly who that customer was.
I set both glasses on my tray and made my way over to table twelve, where I found a man with dark hair and intense green eyes who looked like he’d just walked off a movie set.
He looked up from his phone as I approached and smiled in greeting, revealing perfect white teeth.
His eyes met mine, and my breath caught in my throat for reasons I couldn’t explain.
There was something about him that drew me in—a kind of mystery or intrigue that made him seem otherworldly.
“Here you go,” I said as I set his drinks down on the table.
“One espresso and one glass of Talisker.”
“Thank you.” He flashed me another smile as he reached for his drinks.
I know that’s not exactly what you ordered, but I hope it will do for now,” I said.
“Now that it’s in front of me, it might be just what I need.” He winked before he took a sip of his coffee.
“It’s also my drink of choice,” he added.
“Not many people choose whiskey while they wait for their flights.”
“There’s nothing like a good scotch.”
He nodded in agreement.
He seemed too young to be drinking such an expensive liquor.
But then again, who was I to judge?
I’d been known to splurge on a bottle of Talisker or two myself.
“I’ll take you at your word for that,” he said.
“I’m Erik,” he added as he extended his hand toward me.
“It’s nice to meet you.” His voice was deep and sultry with a hint of a Scottish accent.
The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end, and all at once I felt like my legs might give out.
I had never been one to fall head over heels for a man based solely on his looks alone.
But there was something about this man that was different—something that said there was so much more to him than met the eye.
