"Hey Lady Cop!"
Ben greeted me with his usual smart ass humor.
Some people might get annoyed at being called something like that, especially if you're a woman in a male dominated profession.
But I knew that Ben didn't mean it derogatory.
He meant it more like a term of endearment.
"Hey Ben," I said as I sat down next to him at our break room table.
"The Captain is looking for you," he said.
Oh shit!
I thought to myself.
What did I do now?
I wasn't always on the best of terms with my boss, Captain Richards.
He tended to question my judgement on things because I was a woman.
At times, he could be a bit of a sexist pig.
But I had learned how to deal with him over the years.
"About what?"
I asked Ben.
"I don't know. He just told me to send you in when you got back from call," Ben replied.
I got up from the table and headed towards the Captain's office.
I knocked on the door and waited for him to tell me to come in.
When I went inside, he motioned for me to take a seat.
"Alex, I've received a complaint about you," he said.
"Oh yeah. About what?"
I asked.
The complaining party was sitting in the chair next to mine in the office.
It was Mayor Johnson, the local town politician.

I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.
I knew what this was about.
I had spoken up at the council meeting last night during public comment about the mishandling of domestic violence cases.
I had seen some disturbing things in my line of work and I couldn't just sit back and do nothing.
The Mayor was not happy about me speaking out against him, especially since his son had been involved in one of the cases.
He was a spoiled brat who got away with everything because his dad was the mayor.
"Alex, the mayor here has a problem with your behavior at the council meeting," Captain Richards said.
"I'd like you to explain yourself."
The mayor pulled out his phone and started playing a video from last night's council meeting.
It was footage of me speaking during public comment.
I was explaining how the police department should be doing more to protect victims of domestic violence when they come forward.
In the video, I was pointing my finger at the mayor as I spoke, telling him that he should be ashamed of himself for not taking these cases seriously. "You see officer Chen's aggressive tone and body language," Mayor Johnson said.
"She was being very disrespectful to me and the rest of the council."
Captain Richards looked at me with a stern expression on his face.
He didn't like it when officers got involved in politics.
He thought that it made us look bad.
But I couldn't help it when I saw innocent people getting hurt because of lazy cops who were more interested in their golf games than doing their jobs.
"Officer Chen, do you have anything to say for yourself?"
Captain Richards asked me.
I clenched my jaw tightly together and remained silent.
I knew that if I said anything, it would only make things worse for me.
"Officer Chen, you need to apologize to the mayor for your behavior," Captain Richards said sternly.
"I'm not apologizing to him," I said firmly.
"He needs to take responsibility for his actions."
Captain Richards sighed and rubbed his temples.
He looked like he was about to have a headache.
The mayor stood up from his chair and adjusted his tie.
He was a tall, thin man with gray hair.
He had a smug look on his face, like he knew that he had won.
"Officer Chen, you need to learn to follow the proper channels when you have a problem. You can't just go around disrespecting people in authority," he said as he walked over to where I was sitting.
I could feel my heart rate increasing.
I hated it when people invaded my personal space like this.
The mayor put his hands on the arms of my chair and leaned forward so that his face was right in front of mine.
"Officer Chen, you need to learn your place," he said in a condescending tone of voice.

I clenched my fists tightly together and remained silent.
I remembered the case from last month when Mrs. Peterson came in with bruises all over her face.
She said that the mayor's son had done it to her during an argument at their home.
There was plenty of evidence, including photos and eyewitness testimony from her neighbor who heard the whole thing through their thin walls.
But somehow, all of that evidence disappeared from the records before the case ever made it to court. Captain Richards shuffled some papers around on his desk, not looking at me as he pulled out a form.
He began filling out the form in black ink pen as the mayor stood up from where he was leaning over me and sat back down in his chair.
"I'm writing you up for insubordination," Captain Richards said sternly.
"This will be placed in your personnel file."
I nodded silently, still looking straight ahead at the mayor who was smirking at me from across the room.
His cologne was overpowering and I could feel my stomach turning over with nausea.
"Officer Chen, next time you decide to speak out against someone in authority, remember what happened today," Mayor Johnson said with a smug look on his face as he got up from his chair and headed towards the door.
