The Misfit Kung Fu Group
In a bustling city, there was a neighborhood that was home to a group of misfits.
The leader of the group was a girl named Ming Li.
She was short and agile, and she had a pair of bright eyes that were full of life.
She was friends with another boy named Wei Shen, who was tall and lean.
He was the strategist of the group, and he always had a plan up his sleeve.
Another girl in the group was Lin Yao, who was the martial arts expert.
She had a muscular build, and she could take down anyone who dared to mess with her.
She was also the mentor to the younger members of the group, teaching them how to fight and defend themselves.
One day, Ming Li overheard her parents talking about how their neighborhood was being targeted for demolition by a notorious gangster in the city.
They were going to tear down all the buildings and turn it into a shopping mall.
When I overheard my parents talking about how our neighborhood was going to be demolished, I almost choked on my dumplings.
My chopsticks were hanging in mid-air, and I could hear my heart pounding in my chest.
I wished that I could hear the rest of the conversation, but my parents were speaking so softly.
It was as if they were trying to keep the news from me.
I couldn’t help but wonder how they planned to break it to me later.
What would they say if their little girl asked them where they were going to live?
Would they tell me the truth or would they lie to make me feel better?
“A lot of people have already moved out of the area,” my mom was saying.
“Dragon Head has taken control of most of the city, and we’re just a small fish in his pond.
There’s nothing we can do to stop him.”
I shivered at the mention of Dragon Head.
He was a notorious gangster who had killed many people.
Rumor had it that he would do anything to get what he wanted.
“Still, he has yet to reach our area,” my dad said.
“There is still time for us to pack our bags and leave before he gets here.”
Where did they plan to go?
And why did they have to go?
I had so many questions that needed answers, but I knew that it wasn’t the right time to ask them.
I had to wait for the right opportunity.
“Are you suggesting that we leave?” my mom asked.
“It might be for the best,” my dad said.
“He’ll burn this place to the ground, and we’ll be caught in the crossfire.”
“Let’s go and live with your parents for a while,” my mom suggested.
“We can wait until this whole thing blows over before we come back.”
“Do you think it will blow over?”
my dad asked.
“It’s not as if Dragon Head is going to die anytime soon.”
I swallowed hard as I listened to their conversation.
We were going to lose our home.
And there was nothing I could do about it.
I put down my chopsticks and got up from the table.
“I’m full, Mom and Dad.
I’ll go to bed early tonight.”
I could hear them calling my name, but I didn’t respond.
I couldn’t face them right now.
My head was spinning as I went back to my room.
I couldn’t help but wonder how many more nights we would spend in this neighborhood before we were forced to leave.
Wei Shen was studying when I knocked on his door.
He opened it a crack and peered out at me.
“What’s wrong?”
he asked, frowning.
“Did something happen?”
He opened the door wider to let me in.
“What did you want to talk about?”
I took a deep breath and sat down on his bed.
Then I told him about what I had overheard my parents discussing during dinner.
He listened to me quietly, and his expression grew stormier by the second.

But Wei Shen leaned back against his pillow and looked at me with a thoughtful expression on his face.
“You’re saying that Dragon Head is planning to take over our neighborhood?”
he asked, wrinkling his nose.
“That’s hard to believe.
I mean, he has control over most of the city already.
Why would he bother with a small place like ours?”
“Because there are still people living here,” I replied.
“If he wants to build a shopping mall, then he will have to demolish these buildings first.
And if he tries to do that, people are going to get hurt.”
I looked at him searchingly.
“Do you think my parents were telling the truth?
Are we really going to lose our homes?”
Wei Shen sighed and looked down at his hands.
“I don’t know what to say.
I mean, it’s not like I’m an expert on these things.
But from what you’ve told me, it sounds like we’re in trouble.”
He looked at me.
“Where did you hear this from?
Is it a reliable source?”
I nodded my head seriously.
“If my parents are talking about it, then it must be true,” I said.
Wei Shen arched an eyebrow at me.
“You need to be sure before you start panicking,” he said.
“People have been talking about Dragon Head for years, but he has yet to show up at our doorstep.
It might be just a rumor after all.”
“But what if it’s not?”
I asked him.
“What if he really is coming?
Then we need to do something about it before it’s too late.”
Wei Shen sighed and got up from his bed.
“Don’t worry,” he said.
“I’ll look into it.
I felt a surge of relief when he said that.
He was always coming up with plans to get us out of trouble, so I knew that everything would be all right as long as I had him on my side.
I smiled at him gratefully as he opened his door for me.
“Thank you,” I said before I left his room and went back home.
Lin Yao was teaching a young girl how to kick and punch in the park.
The little girl was wearing her school uniform and had her hair tied up in pigtails.
She was practicing her moves with great enthusiasm and kept grinning at Lin Yao whenever she got them right.
Lin Yao watched her carefully with a serious expression on her face, making sure that she got all her moves right before moving on to the next one.
The little girl was a fast learner, but she was still getting the hang of it, so Lin Yao had to be patient with her.

She then demonstrated how to do a spinning hook kick before letting the girl try it out for herself.
Lin Yao watched the little girl as she practiced her moves and felt a sense of foreboding come over her for some reason.
She didn’t know why, but something just felt wrong, and she couldn’t shake off the feeling that something bad was going to happen soon.
She then checked her watch and saw that it was time for her to meet up with me and have lunch at the food stand, so she quickly packed up her things and headed over there to meet me.
I was already there waiting for her when she arrived and had ordered our food for us while I waited for her to get here.
I waved at her as she approached me and smiled at her when she sat down in front of me.
“So, what’s up?”
she asked as she put her bag down next to her and started eating her food.
She was always very eager to know what was going on, so I knew that I had to tell her about Dragon Head as soon as possible before she started panicking like I did earlier when I found out about it.
“If we don’t do something about it soon, Dragon Head is going to demolish our neighborhood and turn it into a shopping mall,” I said as I ate some noodles from my bowl.
“My parents are already planning to move in with my relatives, but I don’t want to leave.I’ve lived here all my life, and I can’t bear to leave my friends behind.”
Lin Yao’s eyes widened in surprise when I told her that my parents were planning to move, and she gulped down some water before speaking again.
“But we can’t just sit here and do nothing!”
she said in a panicked tone of voice.
“We need to come up with a plan before Dragon Head shows up, or else we’re all going to be in big trouble!”
“That’s why I need your help,” I said as I looked at her with pleading eyes.
“You’re the only one who can help us get out of this mess!”
Lin Yao stared at me for a moment before letting out a sigh and nodding her head in agreement.
“I see,” she said as she put her bowl down on the table.
“In that case, I guess I have no choice but to help you guys out.”
“The first thing we need to do is come up with a plan,” Lin Yao said as she looked around for anyone who might be listening in on our conversation.
“We can’t let Dragon Head know what we’re up to, or else he’s going to find a way to stop us before we can do anything about it.
So, we need to be careful and think of a way to fight back without getting caught.”
“I can do that,” I said as I looked at Lin Yao with determination in my eyes.
“But we’re going to need more than just your fighting skills if we want to stand a chance against Dragon Head and his henchmen. You’re going to need an army, and I have an idea of how you can get one.”
“Oh?”
Lin Yao asked as she raised an eyebrow at me.
“I’m listening.”
“What if you teach all of us how to do kung fu?”
I asked as I looked at Lin Yao with pleading eyes.
