Handsome father giving life lessons to his young son in a story format about being kind.
“Now, what do you think is the most important quality in a prince?”
I asked my son.
He thought for a moment and then said, “I think that kindness is the most important thing in a prince.”
I looked at him with a warm smile.
“I agree,” I said.
And then I began to tell him the story of a prince named Alec.
Alec was a prince in the kingdom of Arindale, but he was not just any prince.
He was a very kind prince.
Most princes were known for their strength in battle or for their wit, but Alec was not like that.
He was not very strong, and he was not very smart, either.
But Alec was kind, and his kindness made him very different from other princes.
Every day, he went out into the streets of his kingdom and helped people who were less fortunate than he was.
He would give them food to eat, and he would listen to their stories.
Sometimes, he would even give them a place to stay for the night.
One day, there was a flood in the kingdom, and many people were trapped in their homes.
They were scared and did not know what to do.
Alec heard about this and immediately went to help them.
He used his boat to rescue them from their homes, and then he brought them to his castle, where they stayed until the floodwaters receded.
This is just one example of how kind Alec was.
He was always doing things for other people, and everyone loved him because of it.
But it wasn’t just people that Alec was kind to—he was kind to all living things.
If he saw an animal that was hurt or sick, he would do everything he could to help it.
Once, he even saved a snail that was stuck on a rock by the river.
“Wow,” my son said as I finished my story.
“He really is very kind.”
“Yes,” I replied with a smile.
“He really is.”
Then I looked at my son and asked, “Do you think that there are more important qualities in a prince besides kindness?”
I expected him to say strength or bravery, as most children did when I asked this question.
Instead, he said something that surprised me: “I think intelligence is important too.”
“Well those are two very good answers,” I said with a grin.
“And you are right about intelligence as well; it is also an important quality in a prince.”
We talked for a few more minutes about what it means to be intelligent and how important it is for a prince to be able to make wise decisions before I began the next part of my story:
“How do you think Prince Alec’s kindness affected the people of his kingdom?”
After thinking about it, Alex replied, “I think they loved him very much because he was so kind to them.”
“That’s right,” I said.

“And it also made them want to be kind to each other.
Because he set such a good example of kindness, people in the kingdom were always trying to help each other and make each other happy.
And that made everyone’s lives better.”
Alex seemed to understand this and smiled at me before asking me to continue.
So I did.
On a typical day, Prince Alec would wake up early in the morning and go out to visit the farmers who lived at the outskirts of the kingdom.
He would help them with their morning chores and listen to their stories.
The farmers loved him very much and were always very happy when he came to visit them.
Prince Alec’s castle was not close to where they lived, so they were not used to seeing him every day.
But even though he was a prince, he never thought that he was too important to help them with their work.
He would get down on his hands and knees and dig in the dirt alongside them.
He would sow seeds and help them pull up weeds.
And when they were done working for the day, he would sit with them and eat simple meals of bread and cheese that they had prepared.
After saying goodbye to the farmers and helping them carry their crops back home, Prince Alec walked back to his castle.
As he walked, he smiled and felt very happy.
He loved being able to help other people, and he was grateful for the opportunity to do so every day.
As he walked by a meadow near his castle, he saw a group of children playing on a swing that hung from a tall tree.
They were laughing and having a wonderful time.
He stopped and watched them for a few minutes before approaching them.
The children were very happy to see him and begged him to push them on the swing.
He agreed without hesitation and began pushing them on it one by one.
When they were finished playing, he sat down on the grass and pulled them close to him.
“Once upon a time,” he said, “there was a beautiful princess who lived in a faraway kingdom.”
The children’s eyes lit up in excitement when they heard this.
Prince Alec was a very good storyteller, and the children loved listening to his stories.
They sat with him for a long time, listening to everything he had to say.
When the sun began to set, the children’s parents came to pick them up, and they thanked Prince Alec for spending time with their children.
The prince waved to the children and smiled as they ran off.
Then, feeling very happy, he stood up and continued walking back to his castle.
As he walked, the guards at the gate of the castle greeted him warmly.
“Welcome back, Your Highness,” they said.
“How was your day?”
“It was wonderful,” Prince Alec replied with a smile.
“I helped the farmers in the morning, and then I went for a walk in the meadow and played with some children who were there.
What about you?Did you have a good day?”
“Yes, we did,” the guards said, smiling back at the prince.
“But it wasn’t as good as yours.”
The prince laughed at this and nodded.
Everyone in the kingdom loved Prince Alec very much and thought that he was the best prince in the world.

After saying goodbye to the children, Prince Alec continued walking back to the castle.
On his way, he passed by a road that led into the forest.
As he walked by it, he heard a voice calling out to him.
He stopped and looked in the direction of the voice, but he couldn’t see anyone around.
“Who’s there?”
he asked, looking around.
“Over here, Your Highness!”
the voice called out again.
This time, he saw an old man sitting on the side of the road with a horse-drawn cart next to him.
The cart was filled with large stones, and the old man was struggling to lift them onto the cart.
Prince Alec walked over to him and asked, “Do you need help with something?”
The old man looked up at him and nodded.
“Yes, Your Highness.
I’m trying to load these stones onto my cart, but they’re too heavy for me to lift by myself.
If you don’t mind, would you be able to help me?
Prince Alec agreed without hesitation, and the old man’s eyes lit up in joy when he heard this.
“Thank you very much, Your Highness!”
The prince smiled and patted the old man on the shoulder, then walked over to the cart and began lifting the stones onto it one by one.
The old man watched him in amazement as he did this, and he couldn’t stop smiling.
“I can’t thank you enough for helping me, Your Highness,” he said, his eyes filled with tears of joy.
“I’m always happy to help other people,” Prince Alec replied with a smile.
He finished loading all of the stones onto the cart, then turned to the old man and asked, “Is there anything else I can help you with?”
The old man shook his head and smiled at him.
“Thank you, Your Highness, but that won’t be necessary.
I live near here, so I’ll be able to take it from here on my own.”
The prince smiled and nodded at this, then waved to the old man as he climbed onto the horse and rode away.
“Thank you again for helping me!”
the old man called out to him.
“You’re welcome,” Prince Alec replied with a smile, then turned around and continued walking back to his castle.
As he walked, he thought about all of the people he had helped that day and felt very happy.
He loved being able to help other people and make them happy, and he was grateful for the opportunity to do so every day.
