I was running as fast as I could through the streets of Paris.
My breath was coming out in short bursts, my legs pumping hard.
I had been running for about ten minutes, but I still hadn’t caught sight of the man I was chasing.
I turned a corner, nearly colliding with a woman who was walking out of a shop.
"Sorry," I panted, not stopping to apologize further.
I kept going, turning left then right then left again.
My phone beeped, alerting me that I had strayed off my course.
I looked up, seeing a street sign that read Rue Cler.
I kept going, turning right then left.
My breath was coming out in harsh bursts now; my legs burning from my exertion.
Just as I thought I couldn’t go any further, I saw him ahead of me.
He stopped suddenly, looking around, and I ducked behind a trash can to avoid him seeing me.
I peered around the can, watching him turn left down a small alleyway.
I followed him at a distance, not wanting to be heard.
The alleyway was narrow, with tall walls on either side of me.
I kept going, following him around a corner when he turned right.
Suddenly, we were in a large courtyard.
Killer in the City of Love
I scanned the cobblestones, seeing my target moving toward an arched doorway on the far side.
The evening light was dim, with long shadows cast across the weathered stone walls.
My footsteps echoed off the buildings as I pushed myself to keep going, ignoring the burning in my legs.
He glanced back over his shoulder, his face partially hidden under a black cap.
I saw him fumbling with something in his jacket pocket - maybe a gun.
Two elderly residents were sitting on a bench, watching us pass.
They started at our sudden appearance and I could see them exchange worried glances.
A hanging flower basket swung wildly when he brushed past it.
I picked up my pace, gaining ground with each stride.
Now I was only fifteen feet behind him.
Killer in the City of Love
I paused at the entrance to the courtyard, watching him fumble with something in his jacket.
My hand moved to the concealed weapon at my hip, but drawing it here could cause panic.
The elderly couple on a nearby bench whispered rapidly in French, their eyes darting between me and the suspect.
He hadn't noticed me yet, still focused on whatever was in his pocket.
I edged closer, using a row of potted plants as cover, when movement caught my eye.
Killer in the City of Love
A door creaked open to my left, revealing a young woman in dark clothing.
She gestured frantically, her expression urgent.
I hesitated for a split second, then sprinted toward her, knowing this was the only chance.
