Just sex…that’s all I wanted.
No strings.
No attachments.
No love.
That’s what I told him.
What he told me.
We were both lying.
My name is Lily.
I’m a sexual being.
A woman who just lost her mother to cancer and is trying to find her place in the world now that she’s gone.
I have a job and an apartment in New York City and I’m trying to live my life.
But I’m missing something…something I’ve never had before.
The desire for intimacy with another person.
The need to be touched, to be desired and loved by someone other than family.
That’s why my best friend, Mia, has convinced me to come to The Red Room tonight…the hottest club in New York for singles looking for a good time.
Not that I’m against sex or anything.
I just haven’t had it yet and I don’t know where to start or how to look for it.
I’ve tried dating apps, but they all want either one of two things…a serious relationship or a one night hook-up with no strings attached.
What I want is something in between.
I lean back against the bar, sipping my vodka cranberry and watching the crowded dance floor.
The bass is pumping and the strobe lights are flashing, making it hard to see anything but sweaty bodies moving to the rhythm.
Mia is talking about her latest Tinder disaster, but I’m only half listening.
My fingers drum nervously on the counter and I wonder if coming here was a mistake.
I’ve never been one for clubs.
I’m not even sure why I agreed to come tonight.
Maybe because Mia has been bugging me for weeks and I just wanted to shut her up.
Or maybe because I’m tired of feeling like a virgin at twenty-three years old and I want to change that.
Whatever the reason, I’m here now and I’m going to make the most of it.
I take another sip of my drink, scanning the room for someone…anyone who might catch my eye.
The strobe lights are making everyone look like strangers in a snapshot.
It’s hard to tell what anyone looks like. Suddenly, Mia’s elbow digs into my ribs and her voice rises with excitement as she grabs my arm.
"Oh my God, Lily! Look!"
I follow her gaze across the room and my breath catches in my throat as I see a tall figure emerging from the shadows near the VIP section.
He’s wearing a black suit that looks like it was made specifically for his body and his dark hair is perfectly messy.
His eyes scan the room, stopping briefly on us before moving on.
But even though he doesn’t linger, I feel like he’s seen right through me.
I grip my drink a little tighter, feeling the cold glass in my palm.
My heart pounds in my chest as his gaze comes back to me from across the room.
He’s still standing in the VIP section, but he’s moved to the edge of the railing, looking down at the dance floor.
He lifts his drink to his lips and I watch as he takes a sip.
His eyes never leave mine.
I feel like I’m being pulled toward him, like there’s a string attached to my heart and he’s tugging on it.
I want to look away, to turn back to Mia and pretend I didn’t see him.
But I can’t move.
I can’t look away.
The music is pounding in my ears and I feel like I’m in a dream, like everything around us has stopped moving.
I wonder if anyone else has noticed us staring at each other or if it’s just me. He lifts his drink again, taking another sip, and I watch as his throat works to swallow.
He looks like he’s enjoying himself, but there’s something about him that seems lonely…like he’s hiding behind a mask of confidence and no one knows the real him.
I’ve only seen him for a few seconds, but there’s something about him that draws me in.
I want to know more about him…to find out what makes him tick and what he’s hiding behind that mask of confidence.
He sets his drink down and then he’s standing up, straightening his suit jacket with deliberate slowness.
The strobe lights are still flashing, casting shadows on his face and making it hard to see his expression.
But I can tell by the way he moves that he’s coming for me.
My heart pounds harder in my chest as he steps down from the VIP section and moves through the crowd of dancers on the floor. The sea of sweaty bodies parts as he walks through them, making a path straight for me.
His eyes never leave mine as he moves through the crowd, his dark hair falling across his forehead in messy waves.
His jaw is set and there’s something about him that seems dangerous…like he might be trouble if you got too close.
But I can’t look away even if I wanted to.
He’s like a magnet pulling me in and I have no choice but to go along for the ride.
I think about ducking into the bathroom to escape, but my feet stay rooted to the spot as he moves closer.
"Lily, right?" he says, his voice smooth and confident as he stops in front of me.
"Yeah," I manage to reply, trying to keep my voice steady despite the butterflies in my stomach.
"I'm Alex," he continues, a hint of a smile playing on his lips, "and I think we both know this isn't just about the club scene tonight."
