Julia goes to a club with her friends and tries to ask out her crush, Alex, but he rejects her, leaving her feeling humiliated; she then meets a guy named Liam at the club and starts flirting with him.
He’s there, just as I knew he’d be, because he’s always there, working the bar and talking to the customers with a smile on his face.
I watch him for a minute, then I take a deep breath and step closer, my heart pounding in my chest as I get closer to him.
It’s now or never, I remind myself as I step forward and catch his eye.
“Hey,” I say, trying to sound casual even though my palms are sweaty and my voice is shaking.
I don’t know if it’s because of the music or just because he didn’t hear me, but he doesn’t respond, so I say it again, a little louder this time.
He looks up at me, and for a moment, it feels like time has stopped.
I’m standing in front of him, face-to-face with the man of my dreams, and I’m not sure what to do next.
He looks at me for a moment and smiles, but it’s a polite smile, not the one I was hoping to see.
“Hi,” he says, his voice barely audible over the music.
His eyes are brown and warm, and they seem to be searching mine as if he’s trying to figure out who I am or what I want from him.
I open my mouth to speak, but nothing comes out, so I close it again and swallow hard.
He raises an eyebrow at me, and I can tell he’s waiting for me to say something, but I’m not sure what to say.
The words are stuck in my throat as if they’re trying to fight their way out of me, but they just won’t come.
It was a bad idea to come here tonight, I think as I look at him, willing myself to just go home before I embarrass myself even more than I already have.
But then he smiles at me again, and something inside of me snaps back into place.
I can do this.
I have to do this.
Before he loses interest in me completely, I take a deep breath and force myself to speak.
“I was wondering if you were free tonight,” I say, my voice coming out a little too high-pitched for my liking.
“I was hoping that maybe we could go out sometime?”
The words are out before I can stop them, but it’s too late now.
I can see the look on his face change as he processes what I’ve said.
For a moment, it seems like he might say yes, that maybe he feels the same way about me that I do about him.
But then his smile fades, and he looks down at his hands before he gives me an apologetic shake of his head.
“I’m sorry,” he says.
“I already have plans tonight.”
My heart sinks as I hear the words come out of his mouth.
