Johnny Depp discovered a real pirate ship during a movie shoot, leading him to start a career in archaeology.
The next Pirates of the Caribbean movie was being filmed on location at St. Vincent in the Caribbean, and they’d set up a massive pirate ship on what used to be an empty beach.
It was a bit of a pain in the ass for everyone who lived there, since they were blocking access to the beach for miles in either direction, but it was great for me.
I loved that beach, and I loved that part of the world.
Mostly, though, I loved pirates—so naturally, when my agent called with news that they were interested in casting me as another pirate in another sequel to "Pirates of the Caribbean," I jumped at the chance!
And now here we were filming this scene on location: me playing a fictional character who had once been a real pirate. The irony wasn’t lost on me—and apparently neither was the buried shipwreck.
Johnny Depp—rebel without a cause, Jack Sparrow extraordinaire, and archaeology enthusiast at large—had just found a buried pirate ship.
I couldn’t believe it!
It was so random—and yet not so random after all.
I mean, we were filming the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie!
Of course there would be some connection to real pirates… I bent down and touched one of the planks lightly with my fingertips.
The wood felt soft under my hands—not surprising considering how long it had been buried there.
I knew that an intact wooden shipwreck like this one was extremely rare.
The ones I’d seen before were more than two hundred years old, and they had already started to disintegrate right before my eyes.
I wondered how long it would take for this ship to crumble into nothing—if we didn’t do something about it.
That thought made me jump back as if I’d been burned.
Holy crap!
What the hell was I going to do now?
"Hey! Hey guys!"
