Emily

She is a young woman navigating complex feelings of love and loyalty. She is introspective,emotional,and determined. Emily struggles with her past relationship with her former boyfriend,Jesse,and unexpectedly develops feelings for her father's partner,Camilla. As she prepares for college,she grapples with her emotions and the potential consequences of pursuing a relationship with Camilla,who is eight years her senior and in a relationship with her father.

Camilla

She is Emily's father's partner and a senior at college when Emily was a junior. She is kind,caring,and understanding. Camilla represents stability and warmth in Emily's life,and her relationship with Emily's father deepens during this time. When Jesse betrays Emily,she finds solace in Camilla's embrace. As she prepares for college,Emily contemplates exploring more deeply the feelings she has for Camilla,knowing that such a step could risk estranging her from her father.

Jesse

He is Emily's former boyfriend who cheated on her. He is selfish,insensitive,and noncommittal. Jesse's betrayal drives Emily to question his character and leads to the end of their relationship. Despite his actions,he continues to try to win Emily back,which only serves to further alienate her. His behavior ultimately pushes Emily to focus on more meaningful relationships,such as the one she shares with her father.

I was in love with my stepmother.

I know it sounds crazy, but I can’t deny my feelings.

I’d been in love with her since high school, but never had the courage to tell anyone.

Not even my best friend, let alone the woman I loved.

It was wrong, I knew that.

She was my father’s partner, and I shouldn’t have felt that way about her.

But I couldn’t help it.

I wish I could, but I was unable to stop the feelings from growing inside of me.

Maybe college would be my chance to start over.

To meet someone who liked me for me.

Not that Jesse ever really did.

He’d cheated on me, after all.

For a few weeks, I’d been able to forget what had happened.

To forget that Jesse had wronged me and that my heart was broken into a million pieces.

But those few weeks were over now.

My heart still ached from his betrayal, and I was beginning to realize that I would never be able to go back to him.
