"Hey, how was your day?"
my mom asks as I walk into the house.
It’s only been a few hours since I left for school, but it feels like a whole lifetime ago.
"Oh, it was fine," I say nonchalantly, not wanting to tell her all the crazy things that happened.
She’d just worry.
"Jolt won a prize!"
Piper says excitedly as she walks in behind me.
I shoot her a warning look.
She knows my mom would freak out if she found out about the talent show.
Piper is my best friend at school and she knows everything about me, including how much I hate it when my mom worries.
"What prize?"
my mom asks, looking at me suspiciously.
I sigh.
I can’t exactly keep it from her, but I don’t want to tell her either.
"Jolt won… um… first prize in the tenth-grade pet competition."
I say slowly, hoping she doesn’t pick up on the fact it was part of a bigger talent show.
"Yes," Piper says enthusiastically.
"Sparky and Jolt were awesome!"
Her pet rat is named Sparky and he was Jolt’s backup in the act.
"Your rat won?"
My dad asks, looking at me with amusement.
"Yes," I say dryly.
"I’m going to be a famous photographer one day because my pet rat is talented."
I roll my eyes.

I glance at the kitchen counter, where I see a bunch of ingredients laid out.
There are fresh tomatoes, garlic, and a big pot of boiling water with pasta in it.
"Are you making spaghetti?"
I ask my mom.
She follows my gaze and nods.
"Yes, it’s one of your father’s favorites."
"Can we help?"
I ask quickly, hoping to steer the conversation away from Jolt’s prize.
"Sure," she says.
"I could use some help chopping vegetables."

Piper and I both nod enthusiastically and gather around the kitchen counter.
My mom hands us each a cutting board and a knife.
I start slicing up the fresh tomatoes while Piper begins chopping an onion.
"So, how was your day?"
my mom asks again, this time looking at Piper.
"It was good," Piper replies.
"We had a lot of fun in art class today. Mr. Reed is starting a new project."
"Oh, that sounds interesting," my mom says.
"What kind of project?"
"He didn’t tell us yet," Piper replies.
"But he said it would be really cool."
I smile to myself as I continue slicing the tomatoes.
I know that Mr. Reed is planning a new art project, but I also know that it has nothing to do with Jolt’s prize.
I’m just glad that Piper was able to steer the conversation away from it. My dad walks into the kitchen and sits down at the table with his newspaper.
He glances up occasionally as we work on dinner, but he doesn’t say anything.

I carefully dice the onion and add it to the pot of boiling water with the pasta.
My mom adds some garlic and olive oil to the pot and stirs everything together.
After a few minutes, she turns off the heat and lets everything sit for a bit before serving it up onto our plates.
