It was only 4 o’clock but it was already getting dark outside.
I sat in my room, staring out of the window at the darkening sky.
It was going to be a long night, I could already tell.
I sighed and turned back to my computer.
I had just graduated from college with a degree in elementary education.
I had hoped to get a full-time job at the local school teaching kindergarten, but that didn’t happen.
I also tried to get a job working at the local daycare, but that didn’t happen either.
I applied for numerous jobs, but nothing seemed to work out.
I thought about all of this as I scrolled through indeed.com, looking for any job that I might be able to get.
My phone buzzed on my desk and I looked over at it.
I saw that it was my mom calling.
I picked it up and answered, "Hello?"
"Emily, how was your day?" my mom asked.
It was the same thing every time she called.
I always told her the same thing, "It was fine."
"What did you do?" she asked next.
I didn’t want to tell her that I had done nothing, so I said, "I went to the library."
Which was a lie, but I didn’t want to hurt her feelings or anything.
"So what are you going to do now?" she asked next.
"I don’t know."
My New Job As A Babysitter
I heard her sigh.
"Okay, well I will talk to you later."
"Okay, love you."
I hung up the phone and went back to looking at the job search website.
I wasn’t finding anything that I was qualified for.
I decided to take a break and check my Facebook.
I scrolled through my feed, looking at all the posts from my friends and family.
Then I came across a post that made me stop scrolling.
It was from someone named Jonathan Ortiz.
He was asking if anyone knew of anyone who would be willing to babysit his two children for two weeks.
My New Job As A Babysitter
I read the post over again, making sure that I read it right.
Then I clicked on his name and went to his profile.
He had a picture of himself with two young kids, a boy, and a girl.
His profile said that he worked at the hospital and he was single.
I looked through his pictures and they all seemed normal.
Just him and his kids, or him at work or with friends. I didn’t see anything that made me think he was creepy or anything like that.
So, I decided to send him a message telling him that I would be willing to watch his kids for him.
I started typing out a message, but then I deleted it because it sounded too formal.
Then I typed one out again, but deleted it because it sounded too casual.
I did this a few more times until I finally came up with one that sounded just right.
My New Job As A Babysitter
Then I sent it off to him and waited for a response.
My hands were shaking as I read his response.
It had only taken him a few minutes to get back to me.
I pulled my desk chair closer and read over his message again.
I wanted to make sure that I understood what he was saying before I responded.
I took a deep breath and started typing out a response.
I tried to sound confident, but I could feel my nerves getting the best of me.
After typing and deleting a few drafts, I finally came up with something that sounded good.
I introduced myself as Emily and told him that I had just graduated from college with a degree in elementary education.
I explained that I had been student teaching for the past year and had experience working with kids of all ages.
I told him that I was looking for childcare work while I continued to look for teaching positions.

Then I told him about my strengths when it came to working with children. I explained that I was good at organizing group activities and keeping kids engaged.
I also told him that I was patient and understanding, and that I knew how to handle conflicts between children.
I gave him an example of a time when I had to break up a fight between two students during my practicum, and how I had been able to resolve the situation without anyone getting hurt.
Finally, I told him that I was available to start right away and that I would be happy to meet with him to discuss the details of the job further.
My hands were still shaking as I read over his new message.
He had sent me his phone number and asked me to text him.
I stared at the numbers on my screen, double checking each one before saving them to my contacts.
Then I opened up my messages and typed out a quick text to him.
"Hi Jonathan, this is Emily from Facebook about the babysitting position."
I hit send and watched as the three dots appeared and disappeared several times.
Each time they did, my heart jumped a little bit.
I wasn't sure what to expect from him, but I hoped that he would be willing to give me a chance.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I saw a response come through.
I quickly opened it up and read what he had written.
My New Job As A Babysitter
It was just a simple message, saying "Hi Emily" and asking me how I was doing.
I smiled to myself as I read it.
It seemed like he was going to be nice and friendly.
I took a deep breath and started typing out a response. As I typed, I couldn't help but feel a little nervous.
I knew that this was just the beginning of our conversation, and I didn't want to make any mistakes.
But at the same time, I knew that I needed to relax and just be myself.
After all, Jonathan was just a person who needed someone to watch his kids for two weeks.
It wasn't like we were going to be living together or anything like that.
So, I tried my best to calm down and focus on the conversation at hand.
As soon as I sent the message off, I saw another notification pop up on my screen.
This time, it was Jonathan sending me a picture of himself holding up his hospital ID badge.
He wrote "Here's my ID badge so you know I'm legit"
I smiled at that and sent back a quick reply saying "Thanks! That makes me feel better"
Then I waited for his next response. After a few minutes of waiting, I saw another notification pop up on my screen.
This time, it was Jonathan sending me another picture of himself with his two kids sitting on his lap.

They were both smiling at the camera, and Jonathan had his arms wrapped around them protectively.
He wrote "This is my daughter Emily and my son Jackson. They're both really sweet kids"
I couldn't help but smile at that picture.
It was clear that Jonathan loved his children very much, and that he was proud of them.
As I read the message, I noticed my orange tabby, Max, prowling around my laptop.
He seemed to be looking for something, and I wondered what he was up to.
I continued typing out a response to Jonathan, asking him about his kids' daily routines and what he would expect of me while I was watching them.
Max circled around behind my screen, his tail swishing back and forth against the wall.
I reached out a hand to shoo him away, but before I could even touch him, he leaped up onto my keyboard.
My New Job As A Babysitter
My heart stopped as I watched a flood of hearts, cats, and random face emojis send themselves to Jonathan.
I stared at the message, my fingers hovering over the keyboard.
After a quick check of my calendar to make sure I didn't have any other plans, I typed out a response.
I wanted to sound eager and enthusiastic, but also professional.
I typed and deleted several drafts before finally settling on one that seemed right.
Just as I was about to hit send, Max headbutted my arm, causing me to drop the phone.
I groaned in frustration and picked it up, only to see that it was already 4:30 PM.
Taking a deep breath, I typed out another response.
"I'm free tomorrow afternoon after 2 PM," I wrote.
"That's when most daycares close. Would that work for you?"
I hesitated for a moment before adding one more sentence.
My New Job As A Babysitter
"I'd love to meet your kids and hear more about their routines."
Jonathan's reply came almost instantly: "Tomorrow at 3 PM would be perfect."
I let out a sigh of relief and quickly typed back, "Great! I'll see you then."
There was a brief pause before Jonathan added, "By the way, Emily and Jackson are really into magic tricks—maybe bring one if you know any?"
