Josh shares a special bond with Mia,knowing her as āCinderella.ā They secretly meet in the woods,away from their homes,to explore their feelings for each other. Josh brings small gifts for Mia,like a silver chain with a heartshaped locket,and they exchange sweet notes. His family owns the local gas station where Miaās father works as a mechanic.

He is Mia's supportive and slightly oblivious father. He is a mechanic at the local gas station owned by Joshās family. He is affectionate,gentle,and slightly unaware. He often teases Mia by calling her "Sugar" and shares mutual affectionate gestures with her mother. His lack of understanding regarding Miaās rebellious nature adds to the tension between being protective and being too protective.

I was wearing a black Lululemon jacket and nothing else when I ran out the front door of our large Victorian house on the hill.
"Wait!"
Mom called out, running after me.
But I was already gone, down the long driveway and out the open gate that led to the woods.
I loved running in the fall and winter, when there were no leaves on the trees and I could see for miles through the forest.
I could hear my mom calling me, but I just kept going.
I had been doing this since I was ten years old, and she was used to it.
Sometimes she would send my dad after me, but usually he just called me on my cell phone and told me to be careful.
He worked at the gas station owned by Joshās family, so Josh and I had known each other since we were little.
We kept each otherās secrets.
I had told him about running away from home, and he thought it was cool, but also kind of weird.
"Why do you do that?" he had asked me once.
I wasnāt really sure.
I just liked being alone in the woods.
It made me feel free.
But now I had another secret, one that I wouldnāt even tell my mom.
When it was warm outside, I would steal away to the woods in my tiny white two-piece swimsuit, covered by my Lululemon jacket.
It was a little crazy, but I just didnāt care.
