Margarita and I loved each other with all our hearts, but a band tour kept me away from her, and I didn't know if I would be able to return to her.
I was the band leader, and my love for Margarita was so strong that even when I was on tour, I couldn't stop thinking about her.
A month passed, and I still hadn't returned to her.
I missed her so much, and my heart was always in pain.
Another month passed, and I still didn't return to her.
I knew that Margarita was waiting for me in our home with my parents, hoping that I would return to her.
But I didn't know if I would be able to see her again.
I was so worried about not being able to return to her that I couldn't sleep at night.
Then one night, while I was lying in bed, a phone call woke me up.
It was Robert, one of my friends.
"Layne, congratulations! Margarita is seven months pregnant!"
He told me the news as if he were telling me that it was raining outside.
But his words shocked me so much that my heart stopped beating for a few seconds.
"Pregnant? Are you kidding me? Margarita is pregnant?"
I grip the phone tighter, my hands shaking.
Robert continues to tell me how he saw Margarita at the local market.
He says she was wearing a loose dress, but her belly was so swollen that it was obvious she was pregnant.
My mind starts racing as I pace around the hotel room.
Seven months ago, just before the tour started.
The last night we spent together before I left.
I remember it like it was yesterday.
We were so in love, and we had made love all night long.
Could it be true?
Robert tells me how he saw Margarita trying to hide behind clothing racks when she spotted him at the market, but he'd already seen her condition.
He says she looked so scared and alone.
My chest tightens as I imagine her carrying this secret all by herself for so long.
"Robert, I'm leaving tonight," I say without hesitation.
I pace back and forth in the hotel room, throwing clothes into my suitcase without much thought.
The sounds of my bandmates arguing in the hallway filter through the door.
Their voices rise and fall, discussing the canceled shows and contract obligations.
I can't focus on any of that right now.
My fingers tremble as I dial the airline's number, pressing the phone between my ear and shoulder so I can continue packing.
After what feels like an eternity, a voice answers on the other end.
"Good evening, thank you for calling. How can I assist you?"
I take a deep breath, trying to steady my voice.
"I need to book a flight to Seattle as soon as possible."
"Of course, sir. Let me check the available flights for you."
There's a pause, and I can hear the sound of typing in the background.
"Sir, the earliest flight I have available is at 6:00 AM tomorrow morning."
My heart sinks.
Six hours feels like an eternity when all I want is to be by Margarita's side right now.
But it's better than nothing.
"Okay, book it for me," I say, grabbing my wallet from the nightstand and checking for my credit card.
The operator asks for my credit card details, and I punch them in quickly as she guides me through the process.
Once it's confirmed, I hang up and zip up my suitcase. "One-way ticket to Seattle," I mutter to myself, my voice cracking with emotion.
The confirmation beeps through on my phone just as there's a loud knock at the door.
Before I can react, it swings open and our manager bursts in, waving a contract in his hand.
"Layne, what are you doing? You can't just leave! We have obligations here!"
"Obligations?" I snap, my voice rising.
"My obligation is to Margarita and our child now."
The manager's eyes widen, and he stumbles back a step.
