I was in Miss Lloyd's maths class when I received the news of my mother's death.
The moment I read the message on my phone, I just wanted to scream and cry.
I didn't know what to do.
I was numb.
I dropped my phone and just stared at the wall in front of me.
My boyfriend, Lucas, was sitting beside me, but I didn't even care to look at him.
I just wanted to go away from everyone.
I suddenly stood up and walked out of the classroom without looking back.
I just needed some fresh air.
"Jensen!"
Lucas called behind me, but I ignored him.
He knew that I came to this school with no one knowing who I was.
So, he could easily guess that something just happened.
"Mr. Blake!" Miss Lloyd called after me, but I ignored her as well.
She knew that I wasn't allowed to have a phone or any form of communication.
So, she must have known that it was something serious for me to just ignore her like that.
"Jensen!"
Lucas called again when he finally caught up to me outside the classroom door.
But I still ignored him and continued walking out of the school building.
I reached the main door and just stepped out of it.
"Jensen!" he called again when he reached the door himself.
This time, I stopped walking and turned around to look at him.

"Jensen, what's wrong?"
He asked as he approached me carefully.
I was standing at the top of the entrance steps of the school and I could see that my legs were shaking beneath me.
My vision was becoming blurry and I could hear the sound of footsteps getting closer and closer.
Behind Lucas, I could hear the voices of Mrs Longman and Mr Ridge as they walked towards us.
The morning sun was too bright for my eyes to handle.
I could feel the tears finally breaking through my defenses and I could feel them rolling down my cheeks.
My knees suddenly buckled and I felt myself falling forward.
But before I could hit the ground, Lucas rushed over to catch me.
He grabbed hold of my arm and tried to steady me, but it was too late.

I was already crumpling onto the cold concrete steps.
Lucas tried to catch me, but I was already falling. My palms hit the rough concrete first and I could feel the skin scraping off of them.
I curled inward, pressing my face into my shaking hands as I tried to hide from the world.
The first sob tore through my chest and I felt it echo through the empty courtyard of the school.
The world around me faded into silence, leaving only the sound of my own heart breaking.

Through blurred vision, I could see Lucas kneeling down beside me on the concrete steps.
I could feel the sting of my scraped palms as I pressed them harder against my face.
I didn't want anyone to see me like this.
Mrs Longman tried to help me up, but I flinched away from her touch.
Mr Ridge stood a few feet away, his expression stern and unyielding.
But as he watched me break down, I could see the hint of sympathy in his eyes.
Lucas placed a gentle hand on my shoulder, and I didn't pull away.
His touch was warm and familiar, and it was the only thing that kept me anchored to reality.
As violent sobs wracked my body, I felt Lucas's hand move to my back, rubbing slow circles between my shoulder blades.
I could hear him whispering words of comfort in my ear, but they were muffled by the sound of my own tears. Finally, I lowered my hands from my face and turned towards Lucas.

My eyes were red and puffy from crying, and I knew that my face was streaked with tears.
But I didn't care.
