I didn't know it then, but my life was about to take a dramatic turn.
It all started with a guard named Elena.
She was different from the others.
While they followed protocol to the letter, treated us all like animals, Elena defied the rules.
She showed me kindness, compassion, and eventually, something more.
Something that would make my heart skip a beat.
Something that would make me fall deeply in love with her.
I knew it was wrong.
I knew it could never be.
But I couldn't help myself.
I fell for her, hard, and I knew I'd follow her anywhere, even if it meant my own death.
And in the end, that's exactly what happened.
The day Elena came into my life, I was sitting in my cell, staring at the wall as I usually did.
I was lost in thought, wondering how I'd ended up here, how my life had turned out so wrong.
I'd been accused of a crime I didn't commit, and now I was awaiting trial.
I hadn't given up hope yet; no, not yet.
Into the Dark
I sat on my bunk, running my fingers over the small heart Elena had scratched into the metal frame during one of her night shifts.
I remembered the way she'd stood there, nervously glancing over her shoulder as she marked our secret symbol into the metal.
My cellmate was asleep, his snores filling the darkness of the cell.
I traced the crude etching again and again, feeling the grooves beneath my fingertips.
Each groove reminded me of Elena's touch, her gentle caress, her whispered promises.
A single tear rolled down my cheek, but I quickly wiped it away when I heard footsteps approaching.
Sergeant Jackson's boots stopped outside my cell.
"Prisoner 482, you've got a visitor," Sergeant Jackson announced, his voice gruff but tinged with something I couldn't quite place.
I looked up, surprised. "A visitor? Who would visit me here?"
Elena appeared behind him, her eyes meeting mine with a mixture of urgency and fear.
Into the Dark
She slipped me a folded piece of paper, her fingers brushing against mine for just a moment.
Sergeant Jackson watched from his post, so we kept our distance across the metal table.
I unfolded the paper under the table, keeping my expression neutral as I scanned the contents.
Bank statements, time-stamped security footage stills, and a handwritten note detailing how Marcus Chen, my former employer, had orchestrated the embezzlement scheme that landed me here.
My hands shook as I realized this could be my ticket out.
Into the Dark
Elena stood, her eyes locking with mine.
"Our time is up," she said, her voice steady.
But her eyes told me to memorize every detail before she took the evidence back.
I quickly committed each word to memory, then passed the paper back.
