I came home from work one day, and I heard some strange noises coming from my room.
At first, I didn’t think anything of it until I heard a moan, and then I stopped dead in my tracks.
It was a woman’s voice, and it sounded like it was coming from inside my room.
That’s when I heard my girlfriend, Jennifer, laugh.
I stood still for a moment, trying to figure out what to do.
I thought maybe she had a friend over or something, but then I heard her voice again, and this time it was followed by another woman’s voice.
Into Me
My hand trembles as I reach for the brass doorknob.
The voices continue, oblivious to my presence in the hallway.
I pause, counting my breaths, before turning the handle with excruciating slowness.
The door creaks slightly as I push it open inch by inch, revealing more of my bedroom.
A shaft of afternoon light streams through the window, illuminating discarded clothes on the floor.
My heart pounds against my ribs as the gap widens.
Through the narrow opening, I catch glimpses of bare skin and tangled sheets on my bed.
"Jennifer, what the hell is going on here?" I demand, my voice barely steady.
She turns, startled, and her eyes widen as she sees me.
"It's not what it looks like," she stammers, but the other woman just smirks knowingly.
Into Me
I stumble backward into the hallway, my work boots scuffing against the carpet.
Jennifer scrambles to cover herself with the bedsheet, calling my name, but I can't look at her anymore.
The other woman, still sprawled casually across my bed, lights a cigarette and blows out a ring of smoke.
She reaches for an ashtray on the nightstand—my favorite ashtray—and I clench my hands into fists.
I stride to the hook by the door and grab my truck keys, their metallic jangle echoing in the tense silence.
Jennifer follows me, wrapped in the bedsheet, pleading with me to let her explain.
I don't wait to hear her excuses; I slam the front door in her face and sprint down the porch steps to my pickup.
"Who is she, Jennifer?" I shout over my shoulder, fumbling with the keys.
"She's just a friend, I swear!" Jennifer insists, desperation lacing her voice.
The other woman chuckles softly, flicking ash into the tray.
