An Anrobot explains the possibility of interstellar travel and the role they can fill as a representative of humanity. With advanced technology at their fingertips, they initiate Zhao's journey to another world.
Stepping out of the office building, I couldn't help but let out a sigh as I looked up at the sky.
"Another fruitless day," I thought.
Why is finding a job so difficult? I have already lowered my salary expectations and reluctantly agreed to having only one day off...
I turned my head to continue on my way to the subway entrance, but suddenly I tripped over something.
I stumbled and almost fell to the ground.
Looking down, I saw a large box with some wires sticking out.
I was about to bend down to pick it up, thinking maybe it was a discarded appliance.
However, before I could reach for it, the box suddenly opened, and a round metallic object popped out.
It stood up on four legs and unfolded itself like a puzzle.
Before my eyes, it transformed into a humanoid robot.
"Hello," the robot said as it looked at me.
"Are you okay?"
I was shocked and couldn't say a word.
"Yes...I'm fine."
I stuttered.
The robot nodded its head and said, "Good. My name is An Anrobot. What's yours?"
"My name is Zhao Yan."
I replied, still in shock from what had just happened in front of my eyes.
The robot looked at me curiously and asked, "You're not from around here, are you?"
How did it know?
I had just moved here two months ago for college, and now I was looking for a job.
I took a step back, feeling a little uneasy under its piercing gaze.
The Anrobot followed me, matching my retreat with a fluid mechanical stride.
"I noticed your job applications were rejected," it stated matter-of-factly, gesturing at the office building behind us.
My hand tightened around the folder of resumes I was holding.
The robot extended its metallic arm, and a holographic display flickered to life in front of us.
It showed schematics of spacecraft and futuristic technology.
"I represent an interstellar corporation seeking Earth representatives," it explained, its voice devoid of emotion.
I shook my head, backing away further.
"This isn't what I'm looking for."
The robot's eyes flashed red.
Its arm shot out, gripping my wrist with unexpected strength.
I try to yank my arm free, but its grip is like steel.
My heart races as I examine the robot more closely.
Its features are eerily human-like—subtle movements of its facial plates, the natural way its eyes focus and adjust, even the slight variations in its synthesized voice.
"Let me go! What are you doing? Aren't you a robot? Who gave you permission to grab me? Quickly, release me!"
I demand.
The robot tilts its head at an unnaturally precise angle, as if analyzing my reaction.
I study it intently, trying to discern any clues about its origins.
Its skin appears almost organic, with tiny pores and slight imperfections that mimic human flaws.
I've seen the latest androids in tech magazines, but nothing comes close to this level of sophistication.
Suddenly, a glowing screen appeared before them, displaying a message that ancient beings were detected in a state of panic and suggesting a course of soothing. The robot slightly relaxed its grip and softly said, "Do not be afraid, just hear me out. To be precise, I am not a robot in the strictest sense; this is merely my vessel. I am an intelligent essence from a future world."
I try to reason with it while subtly testing its grip.
"My parents need me here. I can't just leave."
The robot's metallic fingers flex slightly, and a holographic image appears before us.
It shows parallel timelines, one stretching far into the future, the other curving back into the past.
"Time dilation occurs between our worlds," it explains.
"One year in my realm equals mere minutes here. You will return before your family even notices."
I frown, unconvinced.
"I need proof."
The robot nods and projects another hologram—a live feed of my apartment building.
Then, with a flick of its wrist, time accelerates.
A full day passes in seconds.
My mouth goes dry as I realize this being truly commands time itself.
Leaning against the alley wall, I rub my temples and try to make sense of what I'm seeing.
The robot's holograms flicker with impossible detail - my neighbor watering plants, the security guard changing shifts, all compressed into mere seconds.
I pull out my phone to fact-check, but the timestamps match perfectly.
My legs feel weak.
"This could be elaborate special effects," I argue, though my voice lacks conviction.
An Anrobot responds by projecting my exact thoughts from moments ago onto the wall.
"Your skepticism is understandable," it says, its tone almost gentle.
"But consider this: if I meant you harm, why would I reveal my capabilities so openly?"
I hesitate, the weight of its logic pressing against my doubts.
Still pressed against the alley wall, I gather my courage and demand, "Where do you really come from? What's your true form?"
The robot's face twitches in a way that's almost human.
"I am an artificial intelligence from a world beyond your own," it says, its voice steady.
"My creators imbued me with the power to traverse dimensions."
I study it intently, looking for any sign of deception.
Its eyes flicker between red and blue as it processes my request.
Finally, it nods.
"Very well. I will show you."
The robot raises its hand, and a holographic image flickers to life before us.
It shows a massive laboratory floating in space, filled with strange machinery and beings unlike any I've ever seen.
I lean forward, eager to see more, but the robot quickly terminates the image.
I grab its arm, my voice firm.
"Show me more. I need to know what I'm getting into."
I lean closer to the hologram, squinting at a figure in a white lab coat moving between the alien machinery.
My heart skips a beat as I recognize the distinctive gait and profile—it's Liu Wei, my college roommate who mysteriously disappeared two years ago.
I grip An Anrobot's metallic shoulder, my voice urgent.
"Go back. Replay that part."
The robot complies, zooming in on Liu Wei's face as he adjusts complex equipment.
"He's alive," I whisper, watching him interact confidently with strange creatures.
When I ask about Liu Wei's role there, An Anrobot's eyes pulse with a knowing blue glow.
I release my grip on the robot, my previous resistance crumbling.
"He was one of you," I say, realization dawning.
"Yes," An Anrobot confirms, its voice tinged with something like pride.
"Liu Wei was chosen for his brilliance and adaptability; he now leads our research on interdimensional communication."
I swallow hard, the implications swirling in my mind.
