It was the first day of my first summer at an all-gender camp, and I was nervous.
I’d signed up because my mom said it would be good for me to get out of the house and meet new people.
But now that I was standing in front of my cabin, I was having serious doubts.
What if they don’t like me?
What if I do something wrong?
What if… what if… what if… my mind was swirling with all the things that could go wrong.
I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down.
It didn’t help.
"Hey," a voice said behind me.
I turned around and saw a boy with short hair and a tattoo on his neck.
He was staring at me, and I felt my face heat up.
"Hi," I said.
"Are you in this cabin?"
"Yeah."
He smiled, but not like he was happy to see me.
More like he was happy to be here at camp.
I had no idea what to say, so I didn’t say anything.
He walked past me and into the cabin, leaving me standing alone.
I felt stupid.
I always felt stupid when I talked to people I didn’t know, especially people who were cute like him.
I followed him into the cabin and saw that it was empty except for us.
The late afternoon sunlight filtered through the windows, making everything look dusty and old.
He sat down on one of the bunks, patting the spot next to him.
I hesitated for a second before joining him.
His fingers brushed against mine, and I felt a jolt of electricity run through my body.
"Hi," he said again.
"I’m River."
"I’m Jamie," I replied.
We talked for a while about nothing important, but his eyes never left mine.
It was like he was trying to read me, figure out what I was thinking.
I couldn’t stop looking at him either.
Eventually, we ran out of things to say, and the conversation died down.
River leaned in closer to me, his breath hot on my cheek.
I could feel my heart racing in my chest as he cupped my face in his hands.
Our lips met tentatively at first, but soon we were kissing hungrily, like we couldn’t get enough of each other. His hands slid under my shirt, and I gasped at the feel of his skin on mine.
He pulled away from me slightly, looking concerned.
"Are you okay?"
I nodded, unable to speak.
He smiled and kissed me again, this time more gently.
As we broke apart for air, I heard a noise behind us.
"Did you hear that?" I whispered, glancing toward the door.
River nodded, his eyes narrowing. "Yeah, it sounded like someone was outside."
We both turned to see a shadow moving past the window, and River's expression shifted from curiosity to alarm.
After the shadow passes, River and I sit there in silence for a moment, listening to the sounds around us.
We can hear voices approaching - it's Julian and Ziggy, heading to the cabin.
River quickly adjusts his shirt, and I try to compose myself before they walk in.
When they enter, there's an awkward moment as they take in our flushed faces.
Ziggy is the first to break the silence, casually mentioning that they saw us through the window.
Instead of being shocked or judgmental, they share a knowing look with each other.
Julian suggests closing the blinds and locking the door.
River's hand finds mine under the blanket as Ziggy settles beside us on the bed.
The atmosphere shifts as Julian moves closer, his fingers trailing along my arm.
The door clicks shut, sealing us in a world of our own making.
