When Chris first told me that he went barefoot in the spring and summer, I was a little shocked.
I mean, I knew he was a bit of a hippie, but this was new.
I’d never met anyone who did that before.
But when he explained how much he loved feeling the earth beneath his feet and experiencing the world in a way that most people didn’t, I began to understand.
And when I joined him on his daily walks, going barefoot myself, I began to love it.
There was something very intimate about walking barefoot together, something that made me feel like I was closer to him than if we were walking with shoes on.
Maybe it was because we were both vulnerable in some way, with no protection between our feet and the ground.
Or maybe it was because it was something that we both enjoyed, but most people didn’t, so it made us feel like we were part of a special club.
Whatever the reason, I adored those walks and the feeling of being close to Chris that they gave me.
In Your Room
I notice Chris’s eyes light up when I suggest we walk barefoot through the park.
We’re standing at the entrance, and I slip off my sandals and tuck them into my shoulder bag.
The grass is cool and slightly damp between my toes as we step onto the lawn.
Chris takes my hand and leads me toward a winding path that runs through the center of the park.
The path is lined with flowering cherry trees, their pink petals scattered across the ground.
In Your Room
It’s soft against our bare feet as we walk, and I wiggle my toes every now and then, enjoying the feeling of the petals shifting beneath them.
We pause near a wooden bench, and I lift one foot to examine it.
My silver toe ring catches the sunlight, and I smile at Chris. "Ready to keep going?" he asks, squeezing my hand.
I nod, feeling the earth's pulse beneath us as we continue our journey together.
We pause near the fountain in the city center, and I wiggle my toes against the smooth stone tiles.
Chris kneels down, pretending to check if I stepped on anything sharp.
His eyes linger on my bare feet, particularly my unpolished toenails.
I feel self-conscious for a moment, remembering how my last pedicure has grown out.
But Chris’s face lights up with genuine joy.
In Your Room
He points to our feet side by side on the ground - his completely bare, mine adorned only with the silver ring on my second toe.
"Now we almost have matching shoes," he says softly, "Only your toe ring sets us apart."
Standing by the fountain, I study our feet side by side on the warm stone tiles.
The silver ring on my second toe catches the afternoon light, and I twist it thoughtfully.
I hadn’t realized how much this small piece of jewelry distinguished my feet from Chris’s.
The sound of the fountain splashing in the background fills the silence between us as I consider his words.
I glance up at Chris, who is watching me intently.
I can tell he is waiting for a response, but I’m not sure what to say.
After a moment, I look back down at our feet.
My fingers hover over the ring before I reach down and grasp it.
"Do you think I should take it off?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
Chris shakes his head, a soft smile playing on his lips. "No, it's perfect just the way it is."
In Your Room
He pauses, then adds, "Besides, it's like your signature—something uniquely you."
