In the continuation of the Vanguard MC series, Maddox "Max" Myers and Jaxon Devlin are drawn back into each other's lives, despite the dangers and secrets from their past, and with the support of the Vanguard MC, they navigate their way towards a future together.
The pavement is cool and smooth under my bare feet, and I have to force myself to take each step.
My heart pounds in my chest, and I feel like Iām going to puke, even though I havenāt eaten anything in hours.
I reach the front steps and stop, my hand raised to knock on the door, when it swings open.
For a moment, I donāt recognize the man standing in front of me.
His eyes are dark and cold, and his face is set in an expression that is impossible to read.
I know the man who lives here is my fatherāmy biological father, anywayāalthough Iāve met him in person only once before.
But that was a lifetime ago, and the man who stands in front of me now is nothing like the one I remember.
I clear my throat, suddenly nervous.
"Is my dad home?"
I ask, but the man just stares at me without saying anything.
His eyes rake over my body, and I feel like an intruder in my own home.
"Can I come in?"
I ask finally, my voice so soft that itās barely more than a whisper.
The man narrows his eyes at me and takes a step back, as if to let me pass.
I push past him and step into the house that has been a mystery to me for most of my life.
It doesnāt look like it did when my mom was still alive, but it doesnāt look quite like my fatherās house either.
He must have redecorated since I left.
I walk through the foyer and into the living room, where I pause for a moment to take in the changes.
There are pictures on the wall that I donāt recognize, and some of the furniture is different too.
My dad must have had a lot of help from his girlfriend, or his wife, or whatever she is, but I donāt want to think about her right now.
I step through the living room and into the kitchen, where I stand for a moment staring out at the backyard.
The sun is shining, and I can see the swing set that Jax and I used to play on when we were kids.
His house was just next door, and we were inseparable.
He was there for me when my mom died, when my dad left, when things got really bad.
He didnāt need to be asked.
He just offered his hand, and I took it.
It was easy with Jax, at least back then.
He loved me, and I loved him.
It was as simple as that.
But nothing is ever simple, or easy, or uncomplicated, especially not with him.
He was taken away from me because of my motherās mistakes, and my fatherās choices, and nowā¦Iām back to face all of this head-on.
Jax is no longer the boy who lived next door to me; heās a man now.
And not just any man.
Heās part of the Vanguard MC, just like his father was before him.
