I was married to one man, but addicted to another.
I knew it was wrong, but I couldn’t stop.
I’d been drawn to him from the very beginning.
He was my teammate, my lover, and my downfall.
My life was a mess, and he was the epicenter of it all.
My name is Lorenzo Callaghan, but my friends call me Lance.
I’m the captain of the rugby team at Harvard University, and I have everything I could possibly want.
An amazing wife, a full scholarship, and a bright future ahead of me.
But none of that matters because I’m not living for today.
I’m living for tomorrow.
For the day I can finally be free of this charade called a marriage.
My wife, Sophie, doesn’t want me.
Not only does she not want me physically, but emotionally as well.
We’ve been married for over a year now, and we still haven’t had sex.
She says it’s because I don’t show her enough love and affection.
That I’m not emotional enough for her.
I try, but I just can’t fake it all the time.
The truth is, I don’t love her.
Not one little bit.
But I’m stuck with her until I graduate from college.
The only good thing about being married to Sophie is that she’s smart as shit and is studying to be a lawyer.
In Bed with the Roommate
After another sleepless night on the couch, I finally found her in her study.
She was sitting at her desk, surrounded by law books and case studies.
The only sound was the ticking of the clock on her desk.
I leaned against the doorframe, watching her highlight some paperwork.
My hands were trembling as I shoved them into my pockets.
I cleared my throat to get her attention, but she barely looked up.
"Hey," I said softly.
"Hey," she replied, still not looking at me.
I took a deep breath and walked over to her desk.
I pulled up a chair and sat down next to her.

"I wanted to talk to you about us," I said, trying to sound calm.
"Okay," she replied, finally looking up at me.
"I know we haven’t been seeing eye-to-eye lately," I said, trying to break the ice.
"But I want you to know that I’m committed to our marriage."
Sophie raised an eyebrow at me, clearly not believing a word I was saying. "Really?" she asked sarcastically.
"Yes," I replied, trying to keep my cool.
"I know we haven’t been intimate lately," I said, trying to avoid eye contact with her.
"But I want you to know that I still find you attractive."
Sophie scoffed at me and rolled her eyes.
"Sure you do," she said, clearly not believing me.
"I do," I said, trying to convince her.
"But we need to work on our communication skills," I continued.
"We can’t keep living like this."
Sophie sighed and put down her highlighter.
"What do you want from me?" she asked bluntly.
"I want us to be happy together," I replied honestly.
"I want us to be able to talk about our feelings without getting angry or defensive."
Sophie shook her head and looked down at her desk.
"I don’t know if that’s possible," she said quietly. "Why not?" he asked, feeling frustrated with the situation.
"You’re always so distant and cold towards me," Sophie replied softly.
"It’s hard for me to open up when you’re not willing to meet me halfway."
"I am willing," Lance insisted, feeling his anger rise again.
"But you never give me a chance. You always push me away before we can even have a real conversation."
Sophie sighed and rubbed her temples with both hands.
"I don’t know what else to say," she said quietly.

"Then maybe it's time we stop pretending," I replied, standing up to leave.
I stand up from Sophie's desk, my legs heavy as I move towards the door.
The familiar scent of her lavender candles feels suffocating now.
Behind me, papers rustle as she shifts in her chair.
I pause, my hand on the doorknob, remembering how we used to study together here before everything fell apart.
The wood feels cool against my palm as I grip it tighter, fighting the urge to look back at her.
The ticking of her antique clock fills the silence between us.
My jaw clenches as I slowly turn the handle, the mechanism's click echoing in the tension-filled room.
"Lance, wait," Sophie called out, her voice unexpectedly soft.
I stopped, my heart pounding as I turned to face her.
"Do you really think there's a way for us to fix this?" she asked, her eyes searching mine for an answer.

I pace the study floor, my footsteps echoing against the hardwood as an idea forms in my mind.
Sophie sits rigid at her desk, legal papers spread out before her, but her eyes follow my movement.
The tension from our argument still lingers in the air, but I force myself to stop and face her directly.
"Let's take a trip together," I say, the words tumbling out before I can second-guess myself.
My hands grip the back of her chair as I lean in closer, describing weekend getaways to Cape Cod or Maine - anywhere to escape this suffocating routine.
In Bed with the Roommate
Sophie's shoulders tense at my proximity, and she shifts away slightly, muttering something about upcoming exams and deadlines.
I hover near her desk, my frustration growing as she buries herself in her law books again.
The ticking of the clock and the rustling of papers grate on my nerves.
I try to speak again about our marriage, but she cuts me off with a dismissive wave, not even looking up from her work.
My hands start trembling as I notice a stack of legal documents partially hidden under her textbook.
Something about the way she's protecting those papers sets off alarm bells in my head.

I lean forward, trying to get a better look, but Sophie quickly slides them away.
Her suspicious behavior and continued dismissal push me over the edge.
I turn and walk out, the door closing with a finality that leaves no room for doubt.
I linger in the doorway one last time, watching her bent over her books in the dim evening light.
The familiar lavender scent of her candles clings to me, but it doesn't bring the comfort it once did.
My throat feels dry as I clear it, finally getting her attention.
Sophie looks up, her eyes tired and distant.
Without a word, I place my wedding ring on her desk, the metal clinking softly against the polished wood.
She stares at it for a long moment before nodding slightly.
Neither of us speaks as I turn and walk away.
My footsteps echo through our apartment as I head for the front door.
The gym bag I packed earlier waits by the entrance, a reminder of my escape plan.
As soon as I'm outside, I pull out my phone and text Finn that I'm coming over.
In Bed with the Roommate
"Finn, I need to crash at your place for a bit," I type, my fingers shaking slightly.
His reply is almost immediate: "Of course, man. What happened?"
I hesitate before responding, staring at the screen as if it holds all the answers.
"Long story," I finally type, tucking my phone away and starting the walk to Finn's apartment.
The dimly lit living room of Finn's apartment envelops me in its familiar comfort.
The scent of whiskey lingers in the air, mingling with the faint hint of last night's pizza.
I sit on the couch, staring at my phone as it glows with an incoming text from Sophie.
My heart skips a beat as I read her words: "I've filed for divorce. We can discuss the details later."
A mix of emotions swirls inside me, but I don't have time to process them before Finn emerges from his room.
He moves silently into the kitchen, pouring two glasses of whiskey without a word.
I watch him, feeling a strange sense of calm wash over me.
Finn hands me a glass, and I take a sip, letting the warmth spread through my chest.
We sit there in silence for a moment, the tension between us palpable.

Finally, Finn speaks up, his voice low and gentle.
"You okay?"
I nod slowly, taking another sip of whiskey before setting the glass down on the coffee table.
Finn watches me closely, his eyes filled with concern.
I know he wants answers, but I'm not ready to talk yet. He gets up and walks over to the window, staring out at the city below for a moment before turning back to me.
"I'm going to make us some food," he says quietly.
I nod again, grateful for his understanding.
As he heads into the kitchen, I take another sip of whiskey and lean back against the couch cushions.
My mind drifts back to Sophie's text, and I feel a pang of sadness wash over me.
But it's quickly replaced by a sense of relief and freedom that I haven't felt in years.
I close my eyes and let myself relax into the moment, savoring the peace and quiet that fills this small apartment.
The sound of sizzling meat fills the room as Finn cooks dinner in the kitchen.
The smell wafts through the air, making my stomach growl with hunger.
I open my eyes and watch him move around the kitchen with ease, his muscles flexing beneath his shirt as he stirs whatever he's cooking. After a while, Finn comes back into the living room with two plates piled high with food.
He sets one down in front of me and takes a seat on the other end of the couch.

We eat in silence for a few minutes before he speaks up again.
"Feel better?"
I nod, pushing my empty plate onto the coffee table.
The whiskey bottle sits next to it, and I reach for it, refilling my glass.
Finn watches me closely as I take a sip, feeling the burn of the alcohol in my chest.
He gets up and moves closer to me on the couch, his knee brushing against mine.
I feel a jolt of electricity run through my body at his touch.
Finn reaches for the whiskey bottle, his fingers brushing against mine as he pours himself another glass.
The touch lingers for a moment longer than necessary before he pulls away and hands me the glass.
I take a long sip, trying to steady myself before I speak.
"Finn, there's something I need to tell you," I say, my voice barely above a whisper.
In Bed with the Roommate
He looks at me intently, his eyes searching mine. "What is it?"
I take a deep breath, feeling the weight of the words before they leave my lips. "I'm not just here because of Sophie... I'm here because of you."
