The sun was setting over the ocean, turning the sky into a furnace of oranges and reds.
I stood there, staring out to sea, smoking my last pipe of rupee.
It always tasted better at sunset.
The boy sat beside me, his eyes fixed on the horizon too.
He didn't say anything.
He hadn't spoken much since his family died.
I reached out and put a hand on his shoulder.
The stiff fabric of his shirt was rough against my palm.
I looked down at him.
His brown hair was wind-swept, stuck to his forehead with sweat.
He was lean, like a stick.
Sharp eyes stuck out from his thin face.
They were eyes that watched and calculated every move I made.
"Will you find others?" he asked.
I squeezed his shoulder.
"I don't know."
He turned to me, his eyes narrowing even further as he studied me.
"Why do you think we're alive?"
"We've talked about this. We don't know."
"I think it's the rupee," he said, pulling the pipe from my hand as I exhaled a stream of smoke.
I grunted as he took a long draw.
"You think that plant is why we're immune?"
"I do."
