I am Zylara, the Barbarian Princess of the Wildlands.
I am immortal.
And I have a quest to defeat the Demon Lord controlling the Drakespine Mountains.
My wolf companion Fenrir and I walk across the snow-covered peaks, careful not to slip into any valleys.
The wind whispers secrets in my ear, warning me of steep cliffs and hostile tribes ahead.
"Thanks for the warning, wind," I say with a smile.
Fenrir tilts his head, his tail wagging in response.
He is more than just a wolf.
He is of the Wildlands and can understand human speech.
And I am grateful for that.
"You know, you could speak up more often," I tell him.
"I do when I have something worth saying," he responds.
I laugh, shaking my head.
"You are as witty as ever, Fenrir. But I still wish you could talk more often. It gets lonely sometimes."
Fenrir stops in his tracks, turning to face me.
He lets out a low growl, his eyes looking at me with concern.
"What is it?"
I ask him.
"Do you sense something?"
"Someone is coming," he says.
I turn my head, looking around us.

I scan the jagged ridgeline ahead while gripping my sword's leather-bound hilt.
The metal scrapes against its scabbard as I draw the blade, its polished surface reflecting the harsh mountain sunlight.
Fenrir's hackles rise as he positions himself between me and the rocky outcrop where he detected movement.
A shadow shifts behind the stones, too large to be a mountain goat.
The sound of boots crunching on snow grows closer.

I adjust my stance, planting my feet firmly in the packed snow, and raise my weapon.
Through the swirling snow, I recognize the gait of a man.
He emerges from behind the rocks, his dark cloak billowing in the mountain wind.
Frost clings to his beard, and his breath puffs out in white clouds.
Fenrir's growl softens to a low whine - he's always been wary of this man but never hostile.
I lower my sword slowly, my arms stiff from holding the defensive stance.

The man approaches with his hands raised, showing he's unarmed.
When he's close enough, I see fresh blood staining his leather armor and a deep gash across his left shoulder.
I rush to his side, despite my best efforts to keep my distance.
The gash is deep and jagged, like the slash of a demon's claws.
Dark tendrils spread from the wound beneath his skin, a sign of infection.
I reach out to touch the wound, but he flinches away.
"Zylara," he says, his voice strained.
"I didn't expect to see you here."
"What happened?"
I ask him, my voice firm.
"Who did this to you?"
He shakes his head, wincing in pain.

"It was an ambush. Demon claws. I was traveling through the valley below when they attacked me."
Fenrir circles us anxiously, sniffing the air and glancing back toward the path Alaron came from.
I dig through my pack for the healing herbs I always carry with me.
But before I can reach them, Alaron grabs my wrist.
His grip is weak but insistent.

"Zylara," he says, his voice urgent.
"You can't stay here. Karnath's forces are moving through the mountains. They're tracking me."
I press him for more information, but he stumbles forward, nearly collapsing.
I catch him by his good shoulder, and through the swirling snow, I see the outline of an abandoned mountain keep.
It's the perfect place to take shelter and treat his wounds.
Fenrir bounds ahead, scouting the area.
I half-carry Alaron across the rocky terrain, his breathing growing more labored with each step.
The keep's wooden gate hangs broken on rusted hinges.
I push it open and lead Alaron inside.
The interior is dark and musty, but I find a room that's relatively intact, with old furniture still standing.
I gather firewood from broken chairs and start a small blaze in the hearth.
Alaron mutters something about shadow warriors with poisoned blades as I tend to his wound.

"Shadow warriors?" I ask, trying to keep my voice steady.
"They're Karnath's elite," Alaron replies, his eyes flickering with fear.
"If they're after you, then we're both in grave danger."
