I was going to die.
Again.
For the fifth time this week.
I was used to respawning by now, but dying still sucked.
Especially when I had just gotten to level ten.
I had finally killed the troll that had been raiding the village, and I had just collected my reward of five hundred gold pieces from the town mayor.
Now I would have to drop all that loot and start over again.
Well, maybe not all of it.
I still had my amulet with five stat points assigned to it.
That wouldn't drop with my death.
My character's name was Alex Harper, and I was a level ten ranger in the virtual reality game of Elysium.
I had chosen ranger because archery was one of my skills in the real world, and I was good at it.
Plus, rangers got access to stealth skills, which sounded cool.
I planned on making my character a sniper of sorts.
I had just gotten my first skill point for that, and I was about to assign it when the dragon showed up.
Out of nowhere.
It was huge, at least fifty feet tall, with scales of black and red that shimmered in the sunlight.
Its wingspan looked even wider.
It breathed fire as it swooped down upon us, laying waste to the small forest we were in.
The other players around me died in its initial blast.
I tried to run, but it was too fast.
