Solstice Skye
"Solstice, what the hell happened? I heard gunfire."
That was my father, Ashton Skye, yelling through the phone.
With a deep breath, I composed myself before answering him.
"I’m fine. Someone tried to break in, and I took care of it."
Now my mom, Katherine, was on the phone.
"Oh, honey, are you alright? That must’ve been terrifying."
"Yeah, Mom. I’m fine."
My dad got back on the phone and yelled, "Dammit, Solstice, this is exactly why you have that gun! Not to use it for show!"
My dad didn’t think I had PTSD; he thought it was for attention.
He believed I used the diagnosis to get out of doing things or going places.
It wasn’t that; it was a diagnosis made by three different doctors.
Dr. Mitchell specialized in PTSD, and he’d written a paper on me and my TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) because of how I held the record for the longest shot in the world as an exRecon Sniper.
My dad just thought my service dog, Havoc, was any other dog and not a therapeutic tool to help me.
My mom got on the phone again.
"Solstice, how about I come there for a few days?"
"You just don’t want to come to state fair with me!" her daughter said.
