Nashville, Tennessee 2050
"Solstice, what the hell is this on your wrist for?"
My father asked, staring at the black strap wrapped around my wrist.
"My service dog, he’ll be here any minute now, it’s just for a little while. He’s supposed to help me with my PTSD."
I told him, not wanting to go into it right now.
It was obvious by the look on his face he didn’t believe in what he called "that bullshit."
He had no idea what it was like to wake up every night with nightmares, to not be able to go in a crowded store without having an anxiety attack, to want to hurt someone who touches you and you don’t know.
My mother Katherine walked in the room at the perfect time, saving me from having to explain it all to him once again.
"Ashton, it’s real. Solstice has it. The doctor said so."
She told him.
The only reason he humored her was because she was the one that kept him in line and off his booze-soaked butt.
He knew not to cross her or he would be sleeping on the couch and eating scraps for dinner.
"Whatever, it’s all just for show."
He told her, waving her hand again while dismissing what she had just told him.
I stared at the strap, running my fingers over the textured surface, not wanting to argue with him.
His heavy footsteps faded down the hallway.
The living room was quiet except for Mom gathering the breakfast dishes.
My hands shook slightly as I adjusted the strap, making sure it was secure but not too tight.
I walked over to the window, staring out at the garden and yard.
Our neighbor’s cat stalked through the flowers and plants, hunting for something to kill.
I watched her for a minute, watching her movements, using them to ground me in the here and now.
The doorbell rang, making me flinch.
Mom touched my shoulder gently before going to answer it.
I stood up slowly, straightening my shirt out.
"Solstice, your dog is here," Mom called from the doorway.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself, and walked over.
As I reached the door, a soft voice said, "Hi, I'm Riley, and this is Max—he's going to be your partner."
