I am Uni, a bronze rank adventurer of the Seven Cities of the Ghostwood.
Right now, I am seven months pregnant.
My stomach is big and round.
I have a boy growing inside me.
My partner’s name is Jang.
He is a blacksmith.
When I told Jang I was pregnant, he was happy but also worried because we don’t have much money saved.
He thought about quitting his job to become an adventurer so that he could earn more bounty, but I wouldn’t let him.
Instead, I said I would continue adventuring until I give birth.
Jang wasn’t comfortable with this, but he knew I was right.
If he became an adventurer, it would take him a long time to reach bronze rank like me.
And even though I am pregnant, I can still fight monsters.
I have slain countless monsters and earned a good amount of bounty from them.
Plus, my body has changed since becoming pregnant.
I am stronger and can run longer distances than before.
I can also eat more food than ever, and my body absorbs the nutrients better.
My senses have also become sharper; I can smell things from far away and hear sounds that are too faint for others to detect.
I can see better in the dark as well.
I stand at the edge of the Ghostwood, checking my hunting gear one last time.
The weight of my crossbow feels familiar against my back, and the leather straps of my modified armor fit snugly around my swollen belly.
Through the trees, I catch a scent that makes my heart quicken - a wounded dire wolf, an easy target worth good bounty.
I follow the blood trail, my enhanced hearing picking up the labored breathing of the beast ahead.
The wolf, already weakened from a previous fight, limps between the shadows of ancient oaks.
I position myself behind a fallen log, carefully drawing my crossbow.
"Uni, are you sure about this?" Jang's voice crackled through the communication stone, laced with concern.
"Jang, I can handle it," I replied, steadying my breath as I took aim.
"But what if the wolf isn't alone? You know how they hunt in packs," he insisted, his worry palpable even from afar.
Following the blood trail, I crouch behind a fallen log.
My crossbow is trained on the wounded dire wolf ahead, its fur matted with crimson droplets that fall onto the frost-covered leaves.
The beast limps through a small clearing, its paws leaving behind a trail of blood that stains the otherwise pristine landscape.
My enhanced hearing picks up the sound of rustling from multiple directions - more wolves closing in.
I try activating my communication stone to alert Jang, but only static responds.
The wounded wolf suddenly raises its head, its yellow eyes locking onto my position.
Before I can squeeze the trigger, a second wolf lunges from the bushes to my left.
