I stumbled out of the train and onto the platform.

It was my third year in college, but I still wasn’t used to the crazy crowds of the BART train.

I was a small-town girl from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

I’d grown up with more trees than people around me, and I’d only moved to the Bay Area for school.

I’d been lucky that Northridge had offered me a scholarship.

My mom had been on the verge of selling her loom to help me pay for tuition.

The train ride had been a blur of elbows, backpacks, briefcases, and an unfortunate incident involving an abandoned soda can and my shoes.

I’d been lucky to get a seat, but by the time we reached my stop, I was ready to put as much distance between myself and my fellow commuters as possible.

I joined a river of people moving towards the elevators.

Everyone around me seemed to be in just as much of a rush as I was, but for some reason they all seemed to know where they were going.
