When I was ten, my parents left.
My mother patted my face lightly, tears streaming down her cheeks as she gazed at me.
My father grasped my hand firmly, his eyes avoiding mine.
They got into the car and drove away, leaving me standing in the front yard of our small town's outskirts.
The fields stretched out in three directions, with only a few houses scattered about.
I stood there, watching the car disappear into the distance, unsure of what to do.
But I wasn't alone for long.
Within minutes, my grandparents were rushing out of their house and sweeping me into their arms.
Nonna Sofi held me close, her breath smelling of basil and tomatoes.
Nonno Enrico put his arm around us, his gentle gaze taking in the scene before us.
They kept their questions quiet until we were back in the house, sitting at the kitchen table with cups of hot tea in front of us.
That day was the beginning of a new chapter in my life.
My parents never came back, and I grew up with my grandparents' love surrounding me.
Il lego dell'amore
I sit at my old desk, surrounded by boxes and memories.
The sunlight streams through the window, casting a warm glow over everything.
My fingers brush against the soft fabric of Amore, her worn edges a testament to the countless nights she's kept me company.
I run my thumb over her faded face, remembering the laughter and tears we've shared.
Nonna Sofi appears in the doorway, a plate of fresh cookies in her hands.
Her eyes are misty as she watches me pack.
"Are you almost done?" she asks softly.
I nod, my throat tight with emotion.
"Just a few more things to go."
She sets the plate down on my desk, her gaze lingering on the boxes stacked around us.

"It's hard to believe you're leaving next week," she says wistfully.
I smile, reaching out to take her hand.
"I'll be back soon," I promise.
"And I'll call you every day."
She squeezes my hand gently, her eyes shining with love.
"I know you will," she says softly.
"Now come downstairs and have some lunch with us."
I follow her down to the kitchen, where Nonno Enrico is waiting for us with a warm smile on his face.
We sit down at the table together, sharing stories and laughter as we eat. The afternoon sun streams through the window, casting a warm glow over everything.
I look around at the familiar faces and feel a sense of peace wash over me.
This is where I belong, surrounded by people who love me unconditionally.
As we finish our lunch, Nonno Enrico pushes back his chair and stands up.
"I have something for you," he says, his eyes twinkling with excitement.
He disappears into the living room and returns with a small package in his hands.
"Here," he says, handing it to me with a smile.
I take it from him curiously, feeling its weight in my hands.
"What is it?"
I ask him eagerly.
"Open it and see," he replies, his eyes shining with anticipation. I tear off the wrapping paper excitedly, revealing a small box underneath.
I lift the lid and gasp in surprise at what I see inside - a brand new laptop!
"Oh wow!" I exclaim, staring at it in amazement.
"Thank you so much!"
Nonna Sofi smiles at me warmly, her eyes filled with love.
"We wanted to get you something special for your first year at university," she explains softly.
"You deserve it."

I hug them both tightly, knowing that wherever I go, their love will always be with me.
Back in my room, I continue sorting through the mementos scattered across my bed.
Each one brings back a memory from my childhood.
There's the stuffed bear I received on my first Christmas with my grandparents, its soft fur now worn from countless hugs.
The photos of me in elementary school plays, my face beaming with excitement as I stood on stage.
The dried flowers that Nonno used to bring me from his garden, their delicate petals now crumbling between my fingers.
My hands shake slightly as I pick up my diary from when I was twelve, its pages filled with dreams of becoming a writer one day.
I place these treasures in a special box, planning to take them with me to my dorm room next week.
As I close the box, Nonna Sofi appears in the doorway again, a thoughtful expression on her face.
"There's something else you should know before you leave," she says quietly, her voice tinged with hesitation.
I look up at her, sensing the weight of her words.
