"What the fuck?"
I whispered.
It wasn’t just a whisper, though—it came out sounding more like a breathy gasp.
Because, really?
What other way could you react when your best friend grabbed your hand and started pulling you toward his bedroom window?
It had only been fifteen minutes since Jake had gotten home.
We’d hung out in the garage, and he’d told me about his trip to see colleges in California.
Now, it was one in the morning, and I was at his lake house.
His parents had bought the house on the other side of town two years ago.
They didn’t live in it.
It was more like a place for them to party.
A place for us to party.
Although neither of those things had happened very much.
I mean, we’d had a few parties since they bought the house, but not many.
And as for his parents…
I didn’t remember the last time I’d seen them do anything just for fun.
They were always working.
Always issuing orders from their office upstairs in their big house on Cherry Street.
But none of that mattered right now.
What mattered was what had just happened outside my bedroom window.
Jake had tapped on it ten minutes ago, motioning me to follow him.
The moon was half full, casting a silver glow over everything outside.
And a minute ago?
A minute ago, I’d seen a dark figure running down the road past his house.
