I stared at my phone, reading the text for the fifth time, still not believing what it said.
Me, Jamie Carter, going to an all girls’ party?
I had to be misreading it.
But when I glanced at the text again, the words remained the same.
"Hey! You’re officially invited to my girls’ night. Be there at eight."
I couldn’t help but wonder if she had lost her mind.
Why would she invite me to a girls’ night?
It wasn’t like I was a girl or anything.
Then again, Mia wasn’t just any girl.
She was a friend and the only person on earth who seemed to get me.
Maybe she really did want me to come.
Before I could change my mind, I texted her back, "Okay, I’ll be there."
When I arrived at Mia’s house, I wasn’t sure what to expect.
When she opened the door, I was shocked by her outfit—a bikini!
"Um… thanks for coming," she said, letting me in.
I glanced around at the other guests, all of whom were wearing the same attire.
I groaned inwardly.
Why hadn’t I figured this out before?
This wasn’t a girls’ night…but a swimsuit party!
Mia was friends with everyone here.
So while this was her party, it wasn’t really mine.
I knew Adrianna Blair, another one of Mia’s closest friends.
The rest were strangers.
Swimming in a Sea of Girls
I shuffled my feet near the entrance, watching the girls splash in the pool through the sliding glass door.
My t-shirt and swim trunks felt bulky compared to their sleek bikinis.
Mia lingered beside me, fidgeting with her hair.
The silence between us grew awkward.
I searched for something to say, anything to break the tension.
"Nice bikini," I blurted out.
Adrianna, lounging on a nearby pool chair, shot me a suspicious look.
Mia’s cheeks flushed pink as she mumbled a quiet "thanks."
Swimming in a Sea of Girls
I shifted my weight from foot to foot, feeling out of place.
The smell of chlorine wafted through the air, mingling with the sound of splashing water and female laughter.
I wandered to the pool’s edge, watching the girls play in the shallow end.
Droplets from their antics hit my legs, sending a shiver down my spine.
Mia caught my eye from the shallow end, gesturing for me to come closer.
I took a few tentative steps forward, noticing Adrianna watching me like a hawk from her perch on a pool float.
The concrete beneath my feet felt rough and warm against my skin.
My t-shirt suddenly felt heavy and confining.
After a moment’s deliberation, I pulled it off and tossed it onto a nearby chair.
Mia swam over to the edge and looked up at me with a mischievous grin.
"Jamie, you know why I really invited you, right?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Adrianna leaned in from her float, her eyes narrowing. "Yeah, Jamie, tell us what you think this party is really about."
I smirked at Adrianna, "I think it’s about sneaking into the house and checking out all your stuff."
Adrianna’s eyes widened in surprise.
She glanced around at the other girls in the pool, then back at me.
I could see the curiosity in her eyes, but also the wariness.
Mia, still in the pool, watched us with a slight frown.
"Jamie," she said softly, "you can’t do that."
I shrugged, "Sure I can. You’re not going to stop me."
Adrianna nodded slightly.
"Okay, but if we get caught…"
"We won’t," I assured her.

Without another word, we slipped away from the pool area, leaving Mia and the others behind.
We entered the house through a side door and tiptoed past the living room where some of the girls were chatting and laughing.
Adrianna led me upstairs to Mia’s room.
I opened Mia’s closet door and was greeted by rows of clothes and shoes.
Adrianna whispered, "So, what exactly are we looking for in here?"

I hesitated, glancing at the neatly arranged shelves. "Honestly, I have no idea. I just wanted to see if you’d actually let me do it."
She chuckled softly, shaking her head. "You’re unbelievable, Jamie. But hey, I’m kind of curious too."
I began rummaging through the drawers, Adrianna keeping watch by the door.
I pulled out a photo album and flipped through it.
There were old pictures of Mia and me, along with her family and other friends.
Adrianna smirked, "You two look pretty close."
I shrugged, "We’ve known each other since we were kids."
I continued to search through the drawers, finding a journal.
Adrianna’s eyes widened as she saw it.
But she didn’t say anything to stop me from opening it.
The first entry was dated from when Mia was ten years old.
It talked about how she had just moved into a new house and felt lonely.

Then she met me, and I had shown her around the neighborhood and introduced her to my friends.
The next few entries were similar, talking about how much she enjoyed spending time with me, but how she was worried that I would eventually move away.
As I flipped through the pages, the entries became less frequent.
But every now and then there would be one about how much she appreciated my friendship or how much I meant to her. I closed the journal and put it back in the drawer.
I glanced at Adrianna, who looked surprised but not upset.

Adrianna broke the silence, her voice soft. "You really mean a lot to her, you know."
I nodded, feeling a mix of emotions. "Yeah, I guess I never realized how much until now."
She gave me a small smile. "Maybe that's why she wanted you here tonight."
