She was sold into slavery as a young girl and later regained her freedom through marriage with Louis. Her past haunts her,and she struggles with the guilt of living a life that could have belonged to others. Despite this,she stands by Louis,supporting him through his internal struggles,and they share a deep bond.

I am marrying Madame Josephine, a woman who was born a slave but became my mistress instead.
We are in the gardens of our plantation in Haiti and we have all the slaves standing nearby to witness this occasion.

I hear the priest ask as he looks at me expectantly.
I swallow hard before nodding my head.
"Yes, I do."
I say finally, making Madame Josephine smile widely at me.
"Madame Josephine, do you take Louis Dubois to be your husband, to love and cherish him until death parts you?"
The priest asks her next.
This time she nods her head without hesitation.
"Yes, I do."
