Haiti, 1789
My wedding day has finally dawned.
I can hardly believe that I am here in Haiti, in the Caribbean.
It feels like a dream, or rather a nightmare.
The journey from France was so long and arduous, and I am not at all sure that I want to be here.
I pace back and forth in the large bedroom, staring out at the gardens below.
The slaves are all out there, watching and waiting for the ceremony to start.
I can hear their murmur of voices and the clapping of their hands, and every now and then a burst of music from the drums.
It is all so strange and foreign to me.
I feel like I have been transported to a different world, and I am not at all sure that I am going to fit in here.
"Madame Josephine!"
A voice calls from outside the room, and I turn to see one of my ladies, Madame LeRoux, entering with my wedding dress.
It is a beautiful dress made of white satin, with intricate embroidery and delicate lace details.

I move away from the window, my bare feet making no sound on the polished wooden floor.
The morning heat is already seeping through the walls of the plantation house, making the air thick and heavy.
Madame LeRoux holds out the dress, and I can see how the white satin catches the filtered sunlight that comes through the windows.
My hands are shaking as I reach for it, causing the fabric to ripple like water.
The weight of the dress surprises me - it's heavier than I expected, with yards of material and intricate embroidery.
I hesitate, my fingers barely brushing the cool satin.
Madame LeRoux lets out an impatient sigh, and I flinch.
"Josephine, you mustn't falter now," she whispers urgently, her eyes darting to the door.
"But Madame LeRoux, what if I don't love him?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Love is a luxury we cannot afford, my dear; remember why you are here," she replies, her gaze softening with a hint of pity.
