I never thought I would see her again.
Nonoka, my childhood best friend from Japan.
We shared a secret that no one else knew, not even our parents.
It was our own little secret that we kept to ourselves.
I often wondered what happened to her and if she ever thought about me.
The last time I saw her was when I was twelve years old.
She and her family visited Boston for a year, and we met in school.
We became best friends immediately, and every day after school, we would meet at the park and play together until it was time for her to go home.
But one day, everything changed.
We made a promise to each other before she left Japan to go back to her home in Tokyo.
It was a promise that only we knew about, and it was a secret that we both kept to ourselves.
Puck Drop
I sit with her at my kitchen table.
The afternoon sun is setting, and the shadows on the table are long.
She fidgets with her teacup, not looking at me as I tell her about my hockey career.
It's a little awkward between us, but we both know that there is an elephant in the room.
We don't talk about it, though.
Instead, we make small talk about our lives and what we've been up to.
I tell her about my job and how much I love playing hockey.
She tells me about her family and how they've been doing.
We both know that we're avoiding the real reason why we're here, but we don't want to talk about it yet.
Then, I mention the old park where we used to play together.
Puck Drop
Her eyes light up, and she reaches into her messenger bag.
She rustles through papers and notebooks until she finds what she's looking for.
My heart races as she pulls out a weathered envelope.
The edges are soft from years of handling, and the wax seal bears the same cherry blossom design we drew in our childhood letters.
